Core 1: Outline

Your typed outline is due:Thursday, October 6th

Rough draft due: Monday, October 12th

  1. Introduction
  2. Opening line? Hook? (This is not required for the outline, but you’ll need to think of one soon.)
  3. Any minimal background on the novella/story/poem that you think is important to set up your thesis.
  4. Thesis statement. [Example: Despite the difference in context, Kafka and Goodman continue to remind readers thatwhile trying to validate one’s worth in family and society, it is easy to lose one’s individuality and humanity.]
  5. Background on Authors: Will you build these paragraphs into the essay or keep them separate?
  6. *If you build it into the essay, you need a topic sentence that orients the reader. Why are you about to share some background information? [Example:The works of Kafka and Goodman were likely inspired by events in their own lives.]
  7. What important information will you share about Kafka? Source?
  8. What important information will you share about the second author? Source?
  9. *Can you relate it to the main idea? If not, you can still mention how important it is that these two very different voices echo each other. That means we are more connected as humans than we think!
  10. **If you feel that the biographical information would work better sprinkled throughout the essay, then give that a try. Just make sure you know what information you will share and cite.
  11. Body Paragraph #1:First idea to support thesis
  12. Topic sentence Introduce this idea [Example: Even though readers do not get a direct account of family life for the characters, it is clear that Gregor and Phil prioritized their families but were not made more connected with them.]
  13. At least one quote from The Metamorphosis that you can cite as evidence. Probably you will have at least two or three examples of how this story relates to the focus of this paragraph.
  14. At least one quote from the companion piece that you can cite.
  15. Body Paragraph #2: Second idea to support thesis
  16. Topic sentenceIntroduce this idea, and see if you can nod to the last idea. Can you transition smoothly? [Example: Family life was soulless for both characters because they devoted so much time to the competitive nature of their work lives.]
  17. At least one or two quotes from The Metamorphosis that you can cite as evidence.
  18. At least one quote from the companion piece that you can cite.
  19. Body Paragraph #3:Third idea. Your ideas should gain momentum, moving from least important to most important as the essay progresses toward the conclusion.
  20. See above
  21. Body Paragraph #4: Fourth idea (I do not require a certain number of body paragraphs)
  22. See above
  23. Conclusion (This is not required for the outline assignment, but you’ll use this as a roadmap.)
  24. Reiterate your main idea. Do not simply restate your thesis.
  25. What idea do you want your readers to take with them?
  26. Will you set off a mini firework?[Example: Gregor and Phil looked for meaning in the wrong place and ended up living a meaningless life, serving others instead of nourishing their unique selves.]
  27. Make sure you leave readers with something thought provoking and tie things up.
