NYCHA Addendum to Intern Handbook

Program Eligibility

You are embarking on your internship because you meet the following eligibility guidelines:

  • Be a current registered degree-seekingCUNY student of any level (pursuing an associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree);
  • Be able to maintain a GPA of 2.5 or above throughout the duration of your employment while enrolled in 3 credits or more per semester as a matriculated student;
  • Be eligible to work under INS laws at an on-campus job (international students ARE eligible for this program)
  • Be available to work at minimum 16 hours per week

General Policies and Practices

At the point at which you were offered the position by staff with CUNY Internship Programs, you were informed of your work site, pay rate, work shift and the number of hours each week you are being hired to work. On your first day of the internship, you can also expect to retrieve your physical NYCHA ID at 90 Church Street in Lower Manhattan. Please bear in mind the following:

  • You are not allowed to work more than 4 hours in one day.
  • During summer and winter breaks, you may be allowed to work additional hours per week if budgeted, based solely on call center needs.
  • A workday in excess of 5 hours has a mandated 30-minute unpaid lunch break (NYS Labor Law).
  • You cannot exceed the hours per week that you agreed to when you were offered the position.
  • All interns get a designated 15-minute break that should only be used during the assigned time frame.

Training & Supervision

Training will take place during your previously scheduled work hours. NYCHA staff is responsible for providing you with the orientation and training that you need to get you up to speed to be able to do your job.

NYCHA should also designate a supervisor to oversee your work and provide you with ongoing feedback. We encourage you to develop a good relationship with your supervisor as he/she will play a significant role in determining what kind of internship experience you have.

Attendance and Punctuality

Interns are important members of NYCHA’s goals to maintain quality service for their customers and residents of NYCHA housing, making your attendance and punctuality critical. Persistent problems with attendance or punctuality and/or failure to adhere to annual/sick leave policies (see below and in your Intern Handbook) will result in disciplinary action up to and including termination of employment.

How to Use Sick Leave

  • Call out no later than 2 hours before you are supposed to start work. Call the NYCHA Contact Center at 718-707-5599 and speak with the supervisor on site.
  • If you are using sick leave for a scheduled doctor’s appointment, give your supervisor as much notice as possible.
