Year 5/6 Newsletter – March2016

Our Learning Challenge for this half term is: ‘What is so special about Brazil?’ As part of this Geography based topic, we will be learning about where Brazil is and explore the physical and human features which are located there. We will learn about the Rio Carnival and we will create masks, music and poetry based on the atmosphere, colours and sounds. Also this half term we are arranging a workshop with the Hull Scrapstore to create a Rio Carnival project – more details to follow shortly!

In Science we are continuing our work on our learning challenge - ‘Could Spiderman really exist?’ As scientists we will be exploring the properties of different types of rocks and investigating how the water cycle affects the rainforest.

English

Year 6 classes will be using the text ‘The Lost Thing’ as a stimulus for their English work this half term. The story was written by Shaun Tan and is a rather sad story of an object that is ‘lost’ and how the narrator attempts to find it a home. We will be writing newspaper reports, a diary and an information text about the ‘Lost Thing’.

Year 5 will be using the story ‘The Incredible Book Eating Boy’ by Oliver Jeffers to give them ideas for their English work this half term. The story is all about a boy with an unusual talent for learning from books by eating them up! Year 5 will write play scripts, story openings and newspaper reports based on this book.
