Last week’s speaker was Gary Edwards whose topic was “Beyond the smoke and mirrors”. Gary has been many things – a lawyer, an educator, a business consultant, and a professional magician. Through his business, High Stakes Communication, Gary works with people who want to communicate more effectively in difficult situations – including sales presentations, performance reviews and business negotiations. Gary alerted us to the fact that, in our interactions with others, there are a number of conversations going on, including the ones in our own heads. Understanding this can help in communicating better with people.
As an example, Gary talked abouthow a salesperson might answer the question “Why should I buy what you are selling?” In his view, there are three steps: connect, control and create. In the first step (connect), the answer to the question is: “You shouldn’t: onlybuy the productif it meets your needs”. The second step (control) is to explain what we do, how we do it and who buys our product. And the third step (create) aims to hand control back to the customer by saying “why don’t we get together to explore whether there is a fit for you and then you decide whether you buy or not?” Gary interspersed his interesting talk with a number of magic tricks which got us all wondering how he did it…
I reported briefly on last week’s Board meeting and our intention to spend some time over the next couple of months on Membership – I couldn’t help thinking that Gary’s presentation provided an ideal platform for how we might “sell” the idea of Rotary to a prospective member!
A number of us (Richard, John C, Angus, Di Casey, John W) attended to Rotary Club of Adelaide’s celebratory lunch on 28 August, commemorating 90 years of Rotary in South Australia. They produced a very interesting booklet (and a video) giving a short history of the Club and its activities from its earliest days. There was a fascinating talk by Prof Ian Maddocks, Senior Australian of the Year, who spoke about palliative care and aged care and the relationship between them, especially the fact that, while the aged might not think well, they can be helped to feel well - having someone who is "present" in the sense of understanding and sharing makes a huge difference and he encouraged us all to "engage with age"!
Dalice Kennedy reported that Soles4Souls has established a partnership with Krocs which will be launched shortly and also a partnership whereby people with disabilities will be packaging up the donated shoes.
Members present signed a condolence card for John Pohl (last year’s District Secretary and a member at Walkerville) whose wife Elizabeth (also a member at Walkerville) passed away two weeks ago.
A message from abroad!

The following email came in from Dean Sullivan, two weeks into their overseas trip:
"Just thought we would let you know we are having a wonderful holiday, but it is very tiring - harder than a retirement day’s work!
Beijing and climbing the Great Wall was magic. Moscow a wonderful city with so much history and beautiful buildings. Now in St Petersburg and about to start our first day with our guide."

For 51 years I have been a voluntary wildlife rescuer, specialising in the preservation of Koalas. Recently I have been honoured by being asked to be Director of the Adelaide Koala Hospital, which is currently being built.
Last year my husband and I were presented to the Royal couple who had expressed their desire to meet the pioneer of modern koala rescue in South Australia.
I am responsible for training koala rescuers from Fauna Rescue, and also some fire and police workers, and speak regularly to both adults and to children to further the cause of promotion of these beautiful animals.
All donations that are received from these sessions go directly toward necessary equipment etc for the much needed koala hospital and I ask that any cheques be written to The Adelaide Koala Hospital.
Many thanks\I look forward to seeing you on September 12th
Rae Campbell

Two salesmen are traveling in the country when their car breaks down. The only house around for miles was a large mansion. They knock on the door and a beautiful widow answers the door. Since it is early evening and the garage will not be opened until morning, she offers to let them spend the night in the guest bedrooms.
In the morning they call the tow truck and leave.
About three months later salesman number one opens a letter and can't believe what he reads. He goes to salesman number two and says:
"When we spent the night at the widow's mansion, did you sneak away into her bedroom in the middle of the night?”
“Why, yes I did."
"And did you use my name?"
"Why, yes how did you know?"
"Well, it seems she died and left me her 5 million dollar estate!"
