Chapter 20 Notes: To Proclaim Liberty to the Captives

I. Centurion’s Servant
Luke 7:1-10
  1. Servant was dear to him
  2. Was sick and ready to die
  3. Centurion heard of Jesus – hope arises
  4. He sends the elders of the Jews to earnestly call Jesus to come
  5. Jews implored him earnestly saying “that he was worthy for whom he should do this”
  6. Jews say – he is worthy
  7. Centurion had built a synagogue for Jews and love the nation
  8. Centurion then sends friends
  9. “I am not worthy”
  10. Notice the contrast – he knows his own heart – not worthy (only grace if Jesus would come)
  11. “I am not worthy that Thou shouldest enter under my roof”
  12. “Neither thought I myself worthy”
  13. Grace – for the unworthy
  14. He has faith in Jesus’ word
  15. “Say in a word, and my servant shall be healed”
  16. Jesus commends his great faith – “I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel” - Jews
  17. Centurion was a Gentile – he had more faith than many Jews
/ II. Widow’s Son
Luke 7:11-16
  1. City called Nain
  2. Much people with Him
  3. Meet a funeral procession near the gate of the city
  4. Was the only son
  5. Son of a widow
  6. She had lost her husband and now her son
  7. May have been her only source of support – great sorrow, grief, pain
  8. Much people with her
  9. Jesus says “weep not” – only Jesus can comfort in this way – dries away the tears
  10. “Young man, I say unto thee, Arise.”
  11. Arise – powerful, almighty, irresistible call to life
  12. Jesus can speak this word in our hearts
  13. Much like the word “live” spoken in the valley of dry bones (Ezekiel 37)
  14. Jesus delivers the son to his mother
  15. Much joy must have filled her heart
  16. The people respond saying, “That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited His people”
/ III. Stilling the Storm
Mark 4:35-41
  1. Jesus said, “let us pass over unto the other side”
  2. Jesus intends that He and His disciples will reach the other side regardless of the circumstance that may happen
  3. Disciples therefore have no reason to fear
  4. Great storm – can be great storms in our hearts
  5. Jesus with them – why should they fear
  6. Rebukes the wind – “Peace be still”
  7. “Be still and know that I am God”
  8. There was a great calm
  9. Disciples marvel – “the wind and sea obey Him”
  10. Nothing is out of His control
  11. Jesus can bring peace to troubled hearts

IV. Man Possessed
Mark 5:1-20
  1. In the country of the Gadarenes
  2. Gentile region on other side of sea
  3. Man dwelt among the tombs
  4. No one could bind him
  5. Not even with chains
  6. There is One (the Christ) who is able
  7. Legion – name of unclean spirits
  8. Legion refers to many
  9. Devils obey Jesus – go into 2000 swine
  10. Jesus delivers the man that no one else could help
  11. The people of the area ask Jesus to depart
  12. Depart – the response of unbelief
  13. Contrast: the response of faith is to desire to be with Jesus
  14. Verse 18 – “he that had been possessed with the devil prayed Him that he might be with Him”
  15. With Him – this is heaven
  16. The people had asked Jesus to leave, but He will not give them their desires
  17. He will still send His gospel to them
  18. “Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee.”
  19. God does great things – compassionate
  20. “And all men did marvel” – verse 20
/ V. Jairus’ Daughter
Mark 5:21-24, 35-43
  1. Jairus was a Jew – ruler of a synagogue
  2. Little daughter was grievously ill
  3. At the point of death
  4. Age 12
  5. He earnestly beseeches Jesus to come
  6. He shows his faith “she shall live”
  7. There is an interruption, delay
  8. Jesus will be more glorified in raising the dead
  9. A servant comes “Thy daughter is dead: why trouble the Master any further?” – (why hope in God? it is hopeless/useless)
  10. Jesus says, “Be not afraid, only believe”
  11. Jesus sends all the weepers out – “the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth”
  12. Only Peter, James, & John, along with the parents are allowed in
  13. Talitha cumi – “Damsel (little girl), I say unto thee, arise.”
  14. Arise – Jesus speaks sweetly and powerfully – irresistible call to life
/ VI. Woman with Issue is Healed
Mark 5:25-34
  1. Illness for 12 years
  2. Had suffered many things of many physicians
  3. Had spent all that she had
  4. Was nothing bettered
  5. But rather grew worse
  6. Picture of a sinner striving to be saved by works
  7. The situation is hopeless – only hope left is outside of herself
  8. She hears of Jesus
  9. There is hope in God – He is able, He is willing
  10. Touch of faith – touching Jesus
  11. Jesus not defiled
  12. She is immediately made whole
  13. There are no hopeless cases for Jesus
  14. Jesus asks, “Who touched me?”
  15. Disciples don’t understand
  16. “Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.”
  17. Go in peace – the experience of all who come to Christ with the weight and burden of their sin
