Chapter 20 Notes: To Proclaim Liberty to the Captives
7th Bible: New Testament
I. Centurion’s ServantLuke 7:1-10
- Servant was dear to him
- Was sick and ready to die
- Centurion heard of Jesus – hope arises
- He sends the elders of the Jews to earnestly call Jesus to come
- Jews implored him earnestly saying “that he was worthy for whom he should do this”
- Jews say – he is worthy
- Centurion had built a synagogue for Jews and love the nation
- Centurion then sends friends
- “I am not worthy”
- Notice the contrast – he knows his own heart – not worthy (only grace if Jesus would come)
- “I am not worthy that Thou shouldest enter under my roof”
- “Neither thought I myself worthy”
- Grace – for the unworthy
- He has faith in Jesus’ word
- “Say in a word, and my servant shall be healed”
- Jesus commends his great faith – “I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel” - Jews
- Centurion was a Gentile – he had more faith than many Jews
Luke 7:11-16
- City called Nain
- Much people with Him
- Meet a funeral procession near the gate of the city
- Was the only son
- Son of a widow
- She had lost her husband and now her son
- May have been her only source of support – great sorrow, grief, pain
- Much people with her
- Jesus says “weep not” – only Jesus can comfort in this way – dries away the tears
- “Young man, I say unto thee, Arise.”
- Arise – powerful, almighty, irresistible call to life
- Jesus can speak this word in our hearts
- Much like the word “live” spoken in the valley of dry bones (Ezekiel 37)
- Jesus delivers the son to his mother
- Much joy must have filled her heart
- The people respond saying, “That a great prophet is risen up among us; and, That God hath visited His people”
Mark 4:35-41
- Jesus said, “let us pass over unto the other side”
- Jesus intends that He and His disciples will reach the other side regardless of the circumstance that may happen
- Disciples therefore have no reason to fear
- Great storm – can be great storms in our hearts
- Jesus with them – why should they fear
- Rebukes the wind – “Peace be still”
- “Be still and know that I am God”
- There was a great calm
- Disciples marvel – “the wind and sea obey Him”
- Nothing is out of His control
- Jesus can bring peace to troubled hearts
IV. Man Possessed
Mark 5:1-20
- In the country of the Gadarenes
- Gentile region on other side of sea
- Man dwelt among the tombs
- No one could bind him
- Not even with chains
- There is One (the Christ) who is able
- Legion – name of unclean spirits
- Legion refers to many
- Devils obey Jesus – go into 2000 swine
- Jesus delivers the man that no one else could help
- The people of the area ask Jesus to depart
- Depart – the response of unbelief
- Contrast: the response of faith is to desire to be with Jesus
- Verse 18 – “he that had been possessed with the devil prayed Him that he might be with Him”
- With Him – this is heaven
- The people had asked Jesus to leave, but He will not give them their desires
- He will still send His gospel to them
- “Go home to thy friends, and tell them how great things the Lord hath done for thee, and hath had compassion on thee.”
- God does great things – compassionate
- “And all men did marvel” – verse 20

- Jairus was a Jew – ruler of a synagogue
- Little daughter was grievously ill
- At the point of death
- Age 12
- He earnestly beseeches Jesus to come
- He shows his faith “she shall live”
- There is an interruption, delay
- Jesus will be more glorified in raising the dead
- A servant comes “Thy daughter is dead: why trouble the Master any further?” – (why hope in God? it is hopeless/useless)
- Jesus says, “Be not afraid, only believe”
- Jesus sends all the weepers out – “the damsel is not dead, but sleepeth”
- Only Peter, James, & John, along with the parents are allowed in
- Talitha cumi – “Damsel (little girl), I say unto thee, arise.”
- Arise – Jesus speaks sweetly and powerfully – irresistible call to life
Mark 5:25-34
- Illness for 12 years
- Had suffered many things of many physicians
- Had spent all that she had
- Was nothing bettered
- But rather grew worse
- Picture of a sinner striving to be saved by works
- The situation is hopeless – only hope left is outside of herself
- She hears of Jesus
- There is hope in God – He is able, He is willing
- Touch of faith – touching Jesus
- Jesus not defiled
- She is immediately made whole
- There are no hopeless cases for Jesus
- Jesus asks, “Who touched me?”
- Disciples don’t understand
- “Daughter, thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace, and be whole of thy plague.”
- Go in peace – the experience of all who come to Christ with the weight and burden of their sin
