What is the UEL Progress Bursary?

The UEL Progress Bursary helps our Home (UK/EU) undergraduates and PGCE students with the financial aspect of studying by providing funds to spend on study-related expenses such as books and other educational resources. The bursary is worth up to £1100 over the course of your studies. There is no catch; this is your reward for progressing and you do not have to repay the money.

Who is eligible ?

  • All Home (UK/EU) full-time undergraduate students who started their study since 2008.
  • Continuing part-time students undergraduate students paying fees of £1,500 per module (if they started their studies from 2012/13

How do I qualify for my UEL Progress Bursary ?

In order to qualify for your UEL Progress Bursary, you must:

  • Submit, by deadline, all pieces of coursework or assignments for each module you are required to study in your first semester and attend all exams (Semester A if you started in September or Semester B if you started in February).
  • Have a good attendance record
  • Continue from your first semester into your second semester
  • Not breach UEL regulations; in particular all pieces of assessment work must be your own work

When will I receive my UEL Progress Bursary ?

At the start of the second semester. You will have been awarded the Progress Bursary automatically if you successfully completed your first semester and progressed into your second semester. Log on to your UEL Bursary account through UEL Direct to check.

What if I need the money to use on books before the second semester ?

Under the John Smith’s ‘Bursary Advance’ scheme, you can receive a partial advance of up to £150 on your UEL Progress Bursary, which means you can take away books, stationary, art materials and selected study essentials you need in your first semester. Your UEL Progress Bursary will pay for these products when you receive it in your second semester. You can register at either John Smith’s Bookshop in Stratford or Docklands

Where can I use my card ?

UEL has partnered with John Smith’s, your UEL campus bookshop. Here you can use your Bursary Card to spend your UEL Progress Bursary in-store on; books and stationary, laptops and tablets, software and digital equipment, cameras and specialist accessories, art materials and sewing machines, medical equipment and Oyster Card top-ups (Docklands only). John Smith’s are regularly adding new products so pop in often to take advantage of new deals and offers.

Your UEL bursary card can be used at the John Smith's bookshops at either the Stratford or Docklands campus, or online at for books and for digital products such as laptops, printers, software and more. If there is anything that you require to support your studies, please let John Smith’s know and we will do our best to source it for you.

Can other funds be added to my account ?

  • You, your family, friends and other sponsors can add additional money to the account by either :
  • Visiting one of our John Smith’s bookshops in either Docklands or Stratford.
