Literacy Staff Position

Position Description

To facilitate youth ministry to middle years students utilizing the 662 Literacy Centre and other LITGROUPS locations, collaborating with other caring adults. This includes: Recruiting and overseeing volunteers; planning and preparing programming elements and materials; collaborative planning, building community relationships, and overseeing direct contact time with students. This position requires 40 hours per week with Brandon YFC.

Supervision

This position is under the supervision ofWestman YFC Literacy Coordinator.

Duties and responsibilities

Youth Ministry

  • Contacting – building relationships to earn the right to be heard
  • Crisis intervention – responding to teens and pre-teens in crisis

Fundraising

  • Responsible for recruiting and maintaining a donor base for personal salary.
  • Writing quarterly prayer letters to supporters
  • Conducting donor visits, or phone calls
  • Hosting occasional events for donors
  • Conducting fundraising presentations to individuals, churches and other groups.

Spiritual Development & Personal Training

  • Take time for prayer, Bible reading and spiritual disciplines, including monthly prayer days
  • Involvement in a missional community of faith
  • Embrace teaching / seminars / conferences for spiritual renewal / growth

Literacy Centre Leadership

Volunteers

  • Recruit, supervise and support volunteer teams for the 662 Literacy Centre and discipleship communities.
  • Ensure the completion of necessary volunteer application and orientation

Facilities

  • Ensure that the 662 Literacy Centre and related facilities and equipment are functioning properly, are clean and are maintained.
  • Ensure that the necessary supplies are available to keep the facilities functioning

Advertising

  • Responsible for advertising and public relations for the 662 Literacy Centre and special YFC events.

Programming

  • Responsible for lesson planning and program development for use during the sessions
  • Responsible to help with special event planning and implementation
  • Responsible to acquire resources and curriculum
  • Communication with parents, schools, steering committee, donor base and mailing lists
  • Distribution and collection of quarterly feedback from students, parents, volunteers, steering committee and applicable others
  • Regular program reporting

Administration & Staff Relations

  • Ensure effective administration so all areas of the 662 Literacy Centre and related programs are functioning effectively.
  • Meet with supervisor for accountability and encouragement.
  • Attend staff meetings
  • Attend monthly All-Staff team meetings
  • Participate in wider staff events

Time Required

This is a full-time position.

  • Should possess the ability to relate to middle-years youth of varying cultures with literacy challenges.

Organizational Compatibility

  • Ability and willingness to accept and implement the ministry methods and concepts adapted by YFC.
  • Criminal record check (A criminal record would not necessarily disqualify an applicant for this position, depending on what a conviction was for, but given the nature of the duties and responsibilities of this position, it could.)
  • Disclosure of and willingness to deal with any unresolved interpersonal or moral issues which may damage ministry effectiveness.
  • Signing of the statement of faith
