Welfare and Health Technology – solutions to promote Health

An international elective Module for students in Nursing Science, Physiotherapy and Psychomotor Therapy.

An international, elective module in Welfare and Health Technology is offered at University College UCC, to give students the opportunity of studying and working with focus on Welfare and Health Technology and acquire competencies to work actively with integrating the technology in their future, professional work. Focus also is on a cross-cultural perspective

ECTS-points: 10 ECTS

Period: week 35 – 40 2016, from August 29th until October 7th

Thistheoretical module is of a total of 6 weeks duration. The language will be in English.

(note: ERASMUS students will be able to combine this module with a following clinical practice module, so totally you will be able to complete 30 ECTS. )

Theme

Welfare and Health Technology is internationally an important factor where it among other things contributes to an efficient improvement of nursing, personal care and rehabilitation procedures. The citizen might then stay longer in his or her own home with the possibility of obtaining an improved quality of life being more independent having personal freedom . Here, the correct implementation process is essential to attain successful results and requires a thorough introduction to the technology of both the professional and the citizen.

Overall aim

To foster international studies for BA students for better understanding of Welfare andHealth Technologies, national and international.

Overall objectives:

  • To study Welfare and Health Technologies in an international perspective
  • To study Welfare and Health Technologies topics
  • To study ethical issues related to the use of Welfare and Health Technologies
  • To study the use and implementation of Welfare and Health Technologies

Student objectives:

-To study Welfare and Health Technologies in different settings

-To study development projects concerning Welfare and Health Technologies in close dialogue with local health professionals

-To study development projects concerning Welfare and Health Technologies in close dialogue with researchers in the field

-To study development projects concerning Welfare and Health Technologies in close dialogue with companies designing and producing the technology

After completion of the module, the student has:

  • Knowledge of theoretical approaches to Welfare and Health Technology
  • Knowledge of the key elements of working with and implementing Welfare and Health Technology in the public, private and third sector, related to relevant theory
  • Been introduced to Identifying needs for Welfare and Health Technology solutions in the health-care sector
  • Been introduced to Identifying needs for Welfare and Health Technology solutions in rehabilitation and optimizing activities, ex physical activity and health promoting initiatives
  • Knowledge of critically assessing Welfare and Health Technology solutions
  • Been introduced to and having the possibility of working with projects including options and barriers concerning Welfare and Health Technology solutions

  • Welfare and Health technological solutions and mental challenges
  • Workshop at Danish Institutes working with Welfare and Health technology
  • Test of Welfare and Health Technology in practice
  • Human mechanisms in processes of change on individual and team level
  • Appreciative communication and motivation
  • Needs and motivation theories
  • Ethics in theory and practice, considerations, challenges and aspects
  • Human contact and human relations while using Welfare and Health Technology
  • Instructive experience of cooperation with other health education students in an international setting

Learning activities

The course consists of a combination of theoretical presentations, practice/research visits, presentations and self-study. The aim is that the participants develop the required skills and competences by discussing and evaluating Welfare and Health Technology, rather than hearing about it.

Guiding structure of the module:Group lessons(2 weeks), Field study/ practicalexperience(2 weeks), Project preparation(2 weeks)

Contents week 1 & 2:

  • Welfare and Health technological solutions
  • Mental challenges regarding Welfare and Health technology
  • Human mechanisms in processes of change on individual and team level
  • Demonstration and discussions of Welfare and Health technology solutions
  • Start-up of portfolio with goals of benefits of the module

Contents week 3 & 4:

  • Workshop at Danish Institutes working with Welfare and Health technology
  • Appreciative communication and motivation
  • Needs and motivation theories
  • Ethics in theory and practice, considerations, challenges and aspects
  • Continuing portfolio

Contents week 5 & 6:

  • Human contact and human relations while using Welfare and Health Technology
  • Self- elected project with topics within Welfare and Health Technology
  • Oral Presentation of project in a conference format

Participation:

It is mandatory to participate in group lessons, portfolio activity, field study and the project activity including presentation of project.

Preconditions: The preconditions for participating in the individual elective module are stated in the curriculum.

Formalities and assessment

The student gets approval for the module participation, by attending min. 90 % of described content. Attendance will be registered.

If the students absence exceeds 10 %, the student have to either do a written assignment (as described below) for the related elective subject, or participate in module 13 again/next semester.

The students get credit by following the description of assessment in curriculum for the related Health Education.

Some travel expenses must be calculated (with student card these will be minimized)
