WINTER ICE STORM & PRIMARY ELECTION

The twenty-sixth biennial Montgomery County Republican Party Primary election was hampered by a winter ice storm that descended on MontgomeryCounty on March 4th. There were multiple power outages across the County and ice covered roads that undoubtedly depressed the voter turnout. “Some polling locations had no voters until almost noon, negating the usual heavy early morning turnout”, County Chairman Dr. Wally Wilkerson said. “I was anticipating an election-day turnout of 25,000 voters”. A total of 43,510 voters cast ballots in the Primary, 25,238 during early voting period and 18,182 on election-day that included 21 provisional ballots counted by the Ballot Board. No problems were reported with the Voter ID rule. “The Party is deeply indebted to every election worker for the conduct of the Primary under unusual conditions”, Wilkerson added.

The most votes cast for all candidates in any race on the ballot were 42,454 for Lt. Governor. The second most votes cast were 42,251 for Governor. The candidate who received the most votes in a contested race was Attorney General Greg Abbott for Governor. He received 39,595 votes. Congressman Kevin Brady received the second most votes in a contested race with 26,851 votes. The unopposed candidate with most votes was County Clerk Mark Turnbull with 31,602 votes. District Clerk Barbara Gladden Adamick received the second most votes in an unopposed race with 31,514 votes.

With results of the General Primary, the Party will have four statewide offices on the May27th Runoff Primary ballot; Lt. Governor, Attorney General, Railroad Commissioner and Agriculture Commissioner; one County office, CountyJudge; one District Office, State House District #16; and two Precinct offices, County Commissioner Precinct #2 and Precinct #4.
