In advance of the due date for the Graduate School Intent to Graduate Form, you must schedule a meeting with the DGS and bring to your meeting this completed and advisor signed worksheet along with a completed Graduate School Intent to Graduate Form. List the courses that you have taken and are taking to satisfy the Ph.D. requirements in Computer Science.

Normally, students are not admitted to the Ph.D. degree program unless they have previously taken basic computer science courses equivalent to CS 201, 231, 250, 270, and 281. Any deficiencies become required courses. CS 201 and 231 do not carry graduate credit, and thus would have to be taken in addition to the requirements listed below if equivalent courses were not taken previously. Each student's program of studies is subject to approval by the DGS. A minimum of 36 hours of formal coursework is required.

Please check the following. I have taken basic computer science courses equivalent to:

CS 201___CS 231___CS 250___CS 270___CS 281___

Required (6 credit hours). Please list the semester that you took the following courses and your grade:

  1. CS 310 (Analysis of Algorithms): Semester:______, Grade_____
  2. CS 381 (Operating Systems): Semester:______, Grade_____

List four additional formal 300-level CS courses (excluding CS 390, 369, 399, 310, & 381) for at least 12 credit hours. If you have taken more than 4 such courses, then pick any 4 to list here, and list the rest below. Do not include non-CS courses here.

List four additional formal courses carrying graduate credit, in CS or another department, approved by the advisor or DGS (excluding CS 310, 381, 369, & 399), and at most 1 of which (3 credits) can be CS 390, for at least 12 credits.

Please note that the Ph.D. requires a total of 72 hours of graduate credit. The remaining 36 hours, which can be in dissertation research hours (CS 399), transfer credit (up to 24 hours), or other courses needed for the research area and approved by the advisor or DGS, will not be listed on this worksheet but are required. CS 390 may be used either as a project course or as preparation for Candidacy, but it may not be used as preparation for the Preliminary Examinations. Students transferring to Vanderbilt, regardless of their preparation, are required to take 24 credit hours of formal course work at Vanderbilt. Students who have taken the equivalent of CS 310 and/or CS 381 may be exempted from these courses and allowed to take other courses, either in the department or outside the department, as approved by the DGS. Depending on their record, students may transfer up to 24 credit hours towards their Ph.D. credit hours. More information can be found at
