readings
  • Access and locate information

Learning Style:
Auditory, visual
Time: 40 - 45 minutes / Method:
  1. Before this activity is begun, using the board, discuss the meaning and rate of GST and PST and where these taxes do/do not apply. Also, discuss how to calculate the taxes. Do several examples together as a class.
  2. On the board, introduce the new vocabulary in the scenarios.
  3. Have the students work in pairs to calculate the total cost in each scenario.
  4. After the calculations are completed, have the pairs compare answers.
  5. Since this activity is being done at the beginning of a term, visual reinforcement using the overhead is given to ensure all students understand the process. Work through the calculations in both scenarios as a whole class.
Follow Up:
  • Students will be given similar exercises at another
time to be sure they understand the concept. These
exercises will be done independently.
  • Discuss with students the need to check your bills to be sure they are correct. Sometimes errors are made and if left unnoticed can cost you money.
Debrief/Transfer:

Why did we do this?
How can we apply this to our lives?
