Whereas, Luray native Grover Ford Bowers, Jr., born November 20, 1919, to the late Grover Ford Bowers, Sr., and Corinne Fitts, was graduated from Estill High School and the University of South Carolina; and

Whereas, Mr. Bowers served in the South Carolina Senate from 1962 to 1966 and was the last senator from Hampton County. Always seeking ways to serve, he was a member of the Board of Visitors of Clemson University and the Medical University of South Carolina, as well as of various state commissions, including the State Ethics Commission, State ASCS Commission, South Carolina Highway Commission, State Transportation Commission, and State Forestry Commission; and

Whereas, in recognition of his tireless labors on behalf of the people of South Carolina, in 1978 he was awarded the Order of the Palmetto by Governor James B. Edwards; and

Whereas, he leaves his beloved wife of fiftysix years, Macie Tison Bowers; daughter Martha B. Simons and her husband, Dr. Paul K. Simons; son Grover F.
