Position Overview.ThisCourtservespersonsandentitiesinneedofthe mechanisms,protectionsandreliefaffordedbytheBankruptcy Code, including struggling individuals,companies indifficulty, family farmers,creditors and other interested parties. The Externship Program for the Western Division of the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Illinois provides participants with the opportunity to work with a federal bankruptcy judge and his staff at the United States Courthouse in Rockford, Illinois. Externs will observe and participate in the work of chamber’s staff by reviewing legal submissions, conductinglegal research, and assisting with the preparation of legal documents, suchas orders. Program participants may also assist chamber’s staff with various officefunctions, including proofreading, telephone communications, correspondence andscheduling.Externs will be encouraged to observe trials and other courtroom proceedings, and attend pretrial settlement and mediation conferences.

Minimum Qualifications.To qualify to participate in the externship program, the applicant mustbe currently enrolled in a law school accredited by the American Bar Association and have successfully completed her/his first year law school program. Inreviewingapplications,the court will lookforcandidateswhohave prior experience or an interest in the area of bankruptcy and who demonstrate qualities of integrity, scholarship, commitment to service, intellectual curiosityandcongeniality.A healthy sense ofhumor is always a plus.

Notice to Applicants. This is a NON-SALARIED/ NON-COMPENSATED POSITION. Externs will not be compensated for their time participating or travel or other expenses she/he may incur in connection with the program. Students may earn externship credit for their work.
