Monday, April 21st

Earth Fair & Energy Fair

10:00 am to 2:00pm, Red Square

o Over 60 organizations from the Puget Sound area

o Displays and exhibitions on environmental causes, new

clean technologies; environmental opportunities, recent

innovations.

o Related Departments from the UW on hand to inform

students about majors and courses.

o This year we plan to add a live band!!

Tuesday, April 22nd from

Water Issues into the 21st Century – From the Third World to

our Backyard (Panel discussion)

2:30 to 5:00 PM, Mary Gates Hall Room258

o In conjunction with the Environmental Chemistry Seminar,

this panel discussion will focus on local and global

water quality issues and the related justice issues.

o Tom Carpenter, a respected local activist will talk about

nuclear pollution of waterways in the U.S. and Russia.

o Dr. John Zachara will speak on the leaking of nuclear

waste around Hanford.

o These will be followed by a group discussion on the

importance and delicacy of water Tom Carpenter

(Government Accountability Projects) and Dr. John Zachara

(Scientist: PNNL) who will talk on Nuclear Contamination

at Hanford and in US and international waterways.

Margaret Paegeler (Seattle City Councilmember) and

Jayashree Janaradhan ( A very learned member of SAAN who

has studied water privatizations issues in India) to talk

on water privatization in the developing nations and

their consequences.

Cane Toad – Movie Night

5:30 pm,Mary Gates Hall Room389

o Dr. Sarah Reichard from the Center from Urban

Horticulture,will open the night with a brief lecture on

invasive species, how they come about, what their effects

are on the ecosystems, and some local examples.

o Screening of the exciting and humorous movie – Cane Toad.

o Dr. Reichard will then lead a discussion about the film

and the local importance of invasive species. This event

will be held.

Wednesday, April 23,2003

Educational Forum on Forests

6:30-8:00 PM,111 Loew Hall

o Earth Club and WashPIRG co-sponsor an educational forum

about the importance of our national wild forests in

honor of Earth Day.

o Becky Kelley of the Washington Environmental Council,

Aisling Kerins of WashPIRG, and Morris Johnson of the UW

College of Forest Resources will all present.

o The forum will discuss The Roadless Rule, the importance

of wilderness areas, and forest and fire management

policies.

o Question and comment period will follow each speaker's

presentation. Refreshments Provided!

Recreational Hike to Mt.Baker/Snoqualmie National Forest &

Lake 22

9:00 A.M to 4:00 P.M.

o Recreational hike in honor of Earth Day.

o Hike through old growth forest, culminating at Lake

Twenty-Two (4.5 miles round trip).

o Free lunch provided!!

o Meet at the HUB main entrance at 9:00 A.M.; e-mail

o SAND POINT MAGNUSON PARK COMMUNITY GARDEN WORK

PARTY,sponsored by The Coastal Society

o Project planting in the native gardens, and garden
