Job purpose
To coordinate and supervise technical support for all activities in the teaching laboratories, ensuring the smooth running of the laboratories.
To organise the laboratory areas, including the timely maintenance of equipment therein.
To assist in the development of new practical’s and experiments.
To liaise with academics, demonstrators, students and to supervise the activities of the other teaching technicians.
To provide operational support and local advice to ensure a safe working environment for all staff and students working in theDepartment.
To support the Head of Department in ensuring compliance with up to date University Health and Safety policies, including induction fornewmembers and visitors, and to work in collaboration with the University Health, Safety & Environment Service (UHS&E) to promote a positive Health and Safety culture within the Department.
Source and nature of management provided
The post holder will be line managed by the Departmental Technical Manager but will work closely with other technicians, academics and research staff across the Department,Faculty, andwithin UHS&E.
Staff management responsibility
The post holder will be responsible for the day-to-day supervision of the other Teaching Laboratory Technicians.
Career and Professional Development Activities
A NEBOSH qualificationis appropriate for this post. If it is not held, training will be provided.
Special conditions
Although based in the Departmentalof Physics, the post may involve working in any of the Department’s specialist laboratories or other areas of the campus.
Lifting and handling of heavy and/or large objects is sometimes required and training if necessary will be given. Lifting/handling aids are provided where appropriate. .
Contact with chemicals including solvents, adhesives, etc. can be expected as part of the job and again PPE is provided along with CoSHH assessment sheets for the materials.
To be flexible and to assist with technical duties in other areas of the department, if requested by the Technical Manager due to variations in workload, staff shortages or re-organisation.
From time to time you may be asked to assist in the facilitation of Continuing Professional Development (CPD), schools liaison, UCASand Open Day activities. This will form part of your substantiverole and you will not receive additional payment for these activities.
Main duties and responsibilities

Use your Technical,, Organisational, Managerial and Communicationsknowledge to provide technical support and coordination of the Department’s teaching laboratories and act as Safetycoordinator to the department as a whole:

1 / To supervise and work as part of a team of technicians supporting the Department’s teaching laboratories.
2 / To be responsible for the day to day running of all teaching laboratories.
3 / To be responsible for organising the operation and maintenance of the wide variety of equipment within the teaching laboratories.
4 / To maintain the teaching laboratories as a safe working area with a high level of housekeeping.

To liaise directly with academics, demonstrators, students and technicians regarding all aspects of teaching laboratory activities.

6 / To assist with UCAS, Open Day, schools liaison and CPD activities.
7 / To assist with the purchase and development of new experiments and projects in preparation for next academic year.
8 / Assist with production of manuals, timetables and other teaching lab documentation.
9 / To assist in the safety induction of new students, lab registrations and distribution of manuals.
10 / Organise Health & Safety (H&S) induction events for undergraduates, postgraduates, academic staff, and visitors etc. within the Department.
11 / Arrange and advertise appropriate local H&S training events.
Record outcomes and attendance at H&S training events.
12 / Advise on and assist with the preparation of CoSHH and risk assessments, and keep records thereof.
13 / Adopt and ensure compliance with relevant University, local, national and international safety policies and procedures.
14 / Liaise with the Technical Manager, Head of Department and the University Health, Safety and Environment Service (UHS&E) to ensure appropriate central issues are dealt with as and when they occur. To liaise with the UHS&E on health and safety matters.
15 / Ensure compliance with appropriate health and safety policies. Arrange and participate in scheduled and unscheduled safety checks. Record and follow up and issues arising from these checks.
You will from time to time be required to undertake other duties of a similar nature as reasonably required by your line manager.
