The University of Washington School of Law Externship Program, in partnership with pre-approved host sites, provides participating law students with substantial lawyering experience that is reasonably similar to the experience of a lawyer advising or representing a client or engaging in other lawyering tasks under the supervision of a licensed judge, attorney, or other qualified supervisor. Externships includemultiple opportunities for performance, feedback, and self-evaluation.

All parties understand that the primary purpose of the Externship Program, including the fieldwork and related coursework, is to allow the student to learn from the experience of working as a lawyer.

Substantial Lawyering Experience

During the term of this externship, the Student will be provided with opportunities to engage in the following lawyering tasks:

Externship Host Site and Site Supervisor Qualification and Responsibilities:

  1. The Externship Host Site will provide the Student with adequate workspace and resources to complete assignments at the Host Site.
  1. The Site Supervisor is a licensed attorney who has been admitted to practice in at least one jurisdiction for three years or more, and who has not been the subject of disciplinary action within the past ten years.
  1. The Site Supervisor has primary responsibility for overseeing the Student experience at the Host Site throughout the quarter and monitoring the progress of all Student work including any work assigned by other attorneys.
  1. The Site Supervisor will ensure that the Student receives timely feedback on assignments, either directly from the Site Supervisor or from any other attorneys who assign work to the Student. The Site Supervisor will meet with the Student at least once per week to provide constructive instruction and feedback about the Student’s work.
  1. The Site Supervisor will participate in a site visit with the Faculty Supervisor.
  1. The Site Supervisor will notify the Faculty Supervisor promptly if any issues arise with the Student’s performance at the Host Site.
  1. The Site Supervisor will complete, review with the Student, and submit a final evaluation of the Student to the UW School of Law Externship Program within one week after the end of the quarter.

Student Responsibilities:

  1. The Student will perform work assigned by the Site Supervisor in connection with the externship for a minimum of 30 hours per credit for the quarter and will submit weekly time records to the Faculty Supervisor describing the work completed.
  1. The Student will set a regular work schedule with the Site Supervisor and seek advance approval for any changes or modifications in the schedule.
  1. The Student will comply with the Rules of Professional Conduct and other rules, guidelines, or policies applicable to the particular Host Site.
  1. The Student will attend externship seminar classes and complete class assignments, as instructed by the Faculty Supervisor.
  1. The Student will notify the Faculty Supervisor promptly if any issues arise with the externship.

University of Washington School of Law Externship Program and Faculty Supervisor Responsibilities:

  1. University of Washington School of Law Externship Program Director oversees the Externship Program to assure the educational quality of Students’ experiences and to evaluate Students’ academic performance.
  1. The Faculty Supervisor will provide or arrange for classroom instruction related to the externship experience and will ensure ongoing, contemporaneous, faculty-guided reflection.
  1. The Faculty Supervisor will meet with the Student at the start of the quarter to review and discuss the Student’s educational goals and strategies for achieving them.
  1. The Faculty Supervisor will review the Student’s time sheets, in-class assignments, and self-evaluation reports to assess the Student’s educational achievement.
  1. The Faculty Supervisorwill be available to assist the Student and Site Supervisor with any questions or concerns that arise during the Term.
  1. At the end of the Term, the Faculty Supervisor will evaluate the Student’s educational achievement and assign a grade of Credit or No Credit.
