Which parts of the activity are the accompanying staff prohibited from doing?

Make sure that children involved are in safe positions applying weight to stabilise the structure.

Striking another child with a weapon.

What significant hazards have you identified in the activity?

Trebuchet firing,

Children with axes and shields may hit each other.

Slips and trips

Weather conditions – rainfall, cold, heat, sun

Slips and trips

Which extremes of weather would prohibit the activity from happening?

Heavy rainfall

Are there any other issues that may affect the activity which you need to include in the control measures?

Allergic reactions to the environment, other medical conditions

What control measures do you have already in place?

  • Visual inspection of equipment and wood used for Trebuchets.
  • Children are informed of the hazards involved in the construction of the trebuchets and are instructed on how to assemble them with the right knots and equipment.
  • Supervision during the build and activity
  • Visual check of areas to be used – slip and trip hazards identified
  • Activity located elsewhere if necessary
  • Any risks associated are explained to the children before the activity as part of the brief including making them aware of areas where there is a potential for slips and trips
  • Instructions on how to act and behave with the equipment
  • Instruction on play combat, demonstration and practice ‘fight’ – tap the shield then person holding it drops to floor
  • Instruction on military strategy and manoeuvres, and practice before activity
  • Re-enactments and raid have at least 2 UCET staff members
  • Re-enactments and raid are either scripted or closely directed by UCET staff members
  • Re-enactments are closely supervised and stopped if the children do not follow instructions
  • Equipment used is re-enactment equipment made of wood and rigid rubber
  • Raid soldiers are instructed on how to move and behave and supervised
  • Children advised to wear appropriate clothing for weather and this is checked prior to activity starting.
  • Water available in heat
  • Medical information is checked before the start of the activity and is on the Hazard Exchange form
  • Supervising school leaders are responsible for ensuring that medication is given correctly and at the right time
  • School staff to administer first response first aid to any of their children who injure themselves (Ufton staff are available to support and help if requested following the first response.)

  1. PPE to be issued and worn

  1. Risk Controls Applied

Hazard / Likelihood / Injury Outcome / Env impact outcome / Risk levels / Additional controls to reduce risk further
Malfunction of firing arm / 3 / 4 / 1 / 12 / Inform participants of the danger
Allergies and medical conditions / 3 / 5 / 1 / 15 / Avoid materials which cause anaphylaxis or environment which might worsen an existing medical condition
Slips and trips / 3 / 4 / 1 / 12 / Check footwear
Exposure / 3 / 3 / 1 / 9 / Check weather reports.
Injury from use of equipment / 3 / 3 / 1 / 9 / Use of equipment is demonstrated and supervised

Key

Likelihood / Injury Outcome / Environmental Damage outcome
5 Almost Certain to happen / 5 Death or Permanent disability / 5 Catastrophic Env impact
4 Very Likely / 4 Hospitalisation / 4 Serious Env impact
3 Likely / 3 Treatment by local doctor / 3 Noticeable Env impact
2 Unlikely / 2 F/A treatment / 2 Minor Env impact
1 Very unlikely / 1 Discomfort / 1 Very unlikely
Multiply Likelihood by Outcomes. Any score above 9 must result in control measures being applied.
