U3AEAST LONDON NEWSLETTER

The University of the Third Age

Newsletter no 79 October/November 2016

Firstly, I should like to thank Nookie Middleton on behalf of all of you, for her contribution to U3A in

compiling the newsletter over the past three years. Thank you so much, Nookie, for the inspiration you

have been, and will continue to be to the membership. For my own part, from the day I met Nookie for

ithe first time in Oct 2012, she struck me as being a shining example of someone living life to the full.

Secondly, we want to congratulate Sandra Sterling on being elected as U3A Chairperson. She has already

been demonstrating how well she has risen to the challenge.

Thirdly, the folk who were unable to attend the talks by Lynn England (CANSA) and Lesley-Ann Foster

(Masimanyane) really lost out on two very interesting and informative times. They were enlightening, and,

in Mrs Foster’s case, globally informative.

And for those who may be feeling that your life is not worth much since you stopped “working” (as I am

sure we all do from time to time!), then allow me to encourage you with a short account of a man living

in Melbourne, Australia.:

Mr Allan Lorraine fought for almost three years to get his fellow-residents at a retirement home reimbursed

in owed payments to the tune of $4.38m (about R43800000)., starting with an ombudsman, and finally

achieving his goal.

He was recently awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for his successful efforts.

His age? 92 years young!

There is no doubt that each of us has a part to play, whether small or big. Your effort makes a difference.
