Council Bluffs, Iowa - Railroad Safety Week Activities

June 6 - 10, 2016.


Visit the opening ceremony featuring City of Council Bluffs officials dedicating the week as CB Rail Safety Week. The opening ceremony is Monday, June 6, at 10 a.m., at the RailsWest Museum at 1512 S. Main St, Council Bluffs, IA, 51503 (16th and Main). 10 a.m. - Opening ceremony with Mayor Matt Walsh, offering a Rail Safety Week Proclamation.

Beginning shortly after at 10:30 a.m., there will be rail safety presentations, museum exhibits, and railroad equipment viewing, beginning at 10:30 a.m., and ending at 2 p.m. We expect to have a consist of IAIS, UP, BNSF, and CN locomotives staged next to the old Rock Island Council Bluffs Museum, between 10 a.m., and 2 p.m.

Bring your cameras, the kids, families, and rail fans alike. All will be given an opportunity to see the museum, the museum model railroad, railroad equipment, and the railroads of Council Bluffs locomotives all tied together “at the RailsWest platform behind the viewing fence only.” The event is arranged for public safety enhancement by the Federal Railroad Administration; Region 6, with strong support from safety partners at the City of Council Bluffs, RailsWest Museum, Iowa Operation Lifesaver, the Iowa Department of Transportation Rail Division, and the railroads of Council Bluffs, which include the Union Pacific, the Iowa Interstate Railroad, BNSF Railway, and the Canadian National.

Safety activities and presentations, including police and fire training, will be underway all week. Contact if safety presentations are desired for your group either the week of the event or scheduled for the future. Schools are welcome to request safety presentations.

Safety practices near active railroad lines will be strictly monitored. Please be safe and follow the guidance of rail safety staff and public officials at the event. Safety First!
