Buckle Up & Butt Out

Smoking Cessation Initiative (year) Strategic Plan

In 2009 the Trucking Human Resource Sector Council Atlantic launched a smoking cessation initiative to help address issues related to the health and well being of people working in the transportation sector throughout Atlantic Canada.

Known as “Buckle Up & Butt Out”, the campaign provides voluntary participants with tools, resources and support in an effort to reduce smoking.

Aware of the direct link between employee performance and state of health, and recognizing the high percentage of employees who smoke in the trucking industry, a group of employees working on matters related to employee wellness came together to develop a strategic plan to be used by employers in the trucking industry who share a commitment to encouraging people to stop smoking.

The outcome was the formation of a Smoking Cessation Strategic Planning Committee and the identification of the initiatives that follow.

Companies using this resource have the opportunity to enhance the strategic plan by tailoring to meet their company culture.

Guiding principles are basic truths or standards that guide a committee’s actions and decision making. During the process of developing this strategic plan, the following six guiding principles were established that support the three (3) pillars of this initiative; namely, (1) awareness, (2) education, and (3) support:

  1. Our decisions and actions are always in the best interest of participants. As such they are focused on ensuring that people are only encouraged and never pressured to participate.
  1. We are committed to creating awareness, education and support.
  1. Accessibility with ease to tools, resources and support is a top priority.
  1. We are actively engaged in seeking a fresh and successful approach to smoking cessation.
  1. We will be led on the frontline by ex-smokers who have successfully conquered their addiction.
  1. We will walk our talk by always presenting ourselves as “wellness champions”.
