Reception Topic: Superheroes Block A: I’m a Superhero!

How can you bring out the superhero in yourself? Explore being the best you can be; why you are unique and special and how you can help your body be super strong and healthy, your brain super sparky and your actions super helpful. Draw self-portraits, take part in superhero training and a special superhero ceremony with medals and certificates.

Block A: I’m a Superhero!
[5 sessions] / Main outcome: Understanding of the World

By the end of this block children will achieve the following outcomes: / ·  UW ELG 14 TW: Make observations of animals and plants and explain why some things occur, and talk about changes.
·  L ELG 10 W: Use phonic knowledge to write words in ways which match their spoken sounds. Some words are spelt correctly and others are phonetically plausible. Write simple sentences which can be read by themselves and others.
·  CL ELG 02 U: Answer ‘how’ and ‘why’ questions about their experiences and in response to stories or events.
·  CL ELG 03 S: Express themselves effectively, showing awareness of listeners’ needs. Develop their own explanations by connecting ideas and events.
·  EAD ELG 16 EUM&M: Safely use and explore a variety of materials, tools and techniques, experimenting with colour, design, texture, form and function.
·  EAD ELG 17 BI: Use what they have learnt about media and materials in original ways, thinking about uses and purposes. Represent their own ideas, thoughts and feelings through art.
·  PD ELG 05 H&SC: Know the importance for good health of physical exercise and a healthy diet, and talk about ways to keep healthy and safe.

Look carefully at ourselves: paint a self-portrait for the gallery; measure each other; and write description of yourself. / ·  Think about our physical bodies and create self-portraits ready for the Superheroes Portrait Gallery.
·  Write simple sentences to create a written description to accompany a self-portrait.

Amazing Me!
Look at how your body works by investigating your 5 senses, bones, teeth, muscles, blood, heart and brain. / ·  Investigate the 5 Senses by carrying out simple tests, recording simple data, talking about what they have found out and how they found it out.
·  Record and communicate their findings and begin to use simple scientific language.

Amazing Me!
An alternative, shorter session investigating the 5 senses through popcorn. / ·  Identify the 5 Senses and the associated body part.
·  Make simple recordings of science investigations.
Session 3 EAD
Unique Me!
What makes me, me? Personality, thinking ability, imagination, artistic ability and creativeness. / ·  Learn that humans also have a personality and imagination which makes each unique.
·  Express their uniqueness in a creative way.
·  Appreciate and celebrate the uniqueness of others.

Superhero Me!
Advice for Mr Couch Potato to help him develop into a superhero like us! / ·  Learn how to live a healthy lifestyle by advising Mr Couch Potato how to become a Superhero.
Session 5 EAD
Special Me!
Time to celebrate with certificates and medals. Superheroes are the best they can be! / ·  Celebrate gifts, talents, unique abilities, kind actions and inventive ideas.
