RE:SUMMER 2013 READING PROGRAM

********************************************************************************************

State Superintendent June Atkinson wants every elementary school student in the state to begin summer vacation with at least five new books to read. She recently launched a statewide initiative to make that happen by introducing the "Give Five - Ready Five" campaign, asking for books to be donated to elementary schools.
"Too many students lose valuable literacy skills because they stop reading during their summer break, especially those children who go home to an environment where there are very few books or other reading resources," Atkinson said. "Research done at Harvard has shown that students who read just five books over summer vacation have a better chance of holding on to these skills so our goal is to make sure all elementary students leave on the last day of school with books in their hands."

At Lakeshore Middle school, we share this same philosophy that students should have access to books over the summer. I proud to share that this will be the fourth year LMS is offering a summer reading program for our students. We want our middle school students to hold onto their reading skills and avoid the ‘summer slide’ too!

We will allow rising 7th and 8th grade students an opportunity to check out five books from the Lakeshore Middle School Library to read over the summer.

All library accounts must be clear of overdue books and fines to be eligible to participate in this summer program.

Each student must return the attached permission form SIGNED BY a Parent/Guardian to participate in the LMS summer reading program.

  • Summer check out will be available on Thursday June 6thonly.
  • Students MAY keep the books all summer.
  • All books must be returned to the LMS library the first two days of school in the Fall. (August 26 or 27)
  • All Summer Reading Program booksmust be returned to Lakeshore Middle School Library in the summer reading program drawstring bag.

If any books (or the reading program bag) are damaged, lost or not returned, you must pay replacement costs for new books and/or bags to be purchased.

Student check out for the 2013 - 2014 school year will be allowed once summer program books are returned.

If it becomes necessary to return books over the summer, you may return books in the

orange summer reading program drawstring bag to the Lakeshore Middle School office,

Monday – Thursday between the hours of 8:00 – 4:00.

If you have any questions, you may call 704-799-0187 or email .

We hope you will encourage your student to participate in this reading program!

Please return this form to Mrs. Milliken before June 6th.
