This Week in the Reading Room, Students Are Becoming Very Proficient with Their Tucker

News from the Reading Room October 20, 2017

Greetings!

This week in the reading room, students are becoming very proficient with their Tucker signing. Please continue to ask your student to demonstrate the letters and sounds they practiced this week. I am looking for a volunteer to help me with laminating and cutting out learning games to be used in the classroom. If you are interested in doing this, please contact me at 915-697-2642, email me at , or send a note with your student. Thank you! 

Following are the Illinois State Standards and activities each grade worked on throughout the week.

Kindergarten: RF.k.1d Recognize and name all upper-and lowercase letters of the alphabet. RF.K2d Isolate and pronounce the initial, medial, and final sounds in three-phoneme words.RF.K.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.

Students continued to practice identifying letters and associating their sounds. This week we focused on initial letter sounds for /B/, /b/,/c/,/m/,/t/, and short /a/. Students were introduced to the concept of rhymes using the research based program, A Sound Start. A couple of the activities included identifying rhyming words from books and putting “raindrops”with words that rhyme under one umbrella and “raindrops” with words that did not rhyme under a different umbrella. Students enjoy working with rhymes and I encourage you to have fun with the skill at home by picking a word and seeing how many rhyming words you and your family can create. Songs are another great source of rhyming words. It only takes a minute or two and it’s a great way to help reinforce the skill of rhyming and pass the time in a car. 

First Grade:RF.1.1 Demonstrate understanding of the organization and basic features of print. RF1.2 Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes). RF.1.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words. RF.1.4 Read with accuracy and fluency to (over)

support comprehension.RL.1. Ask and answer questions about key details in a text. Students practiced using decoding skills and increasing vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension skills as they read and discussed the nonfiction passage, Cats Need Care. The passage was sent home on Wednesday and I encourage you and your student to read it together and talk about the information. Students continued to use Orton Gillingham based activities to practice reading and applying consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words. I hope you are continuing to practice theDolch’s 1stgrade site word flash cards with your studentfor a few minutes every day.If the student is struggling to know the words by memory, it will be helpful to just practice a few words at a time and add a few new words when mastery is reached. The flashcards were sent home with your student a couple of weeks ago. Please let me know if for some reason you need another set. 

Second Grade:RF.2.3 Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.RF.2.4 Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.

Students practiced reading and applying all the r-control vowel teams by using Orton Gillingham based activities, websites, and singing The Bossy R song. Students practiced their decoding skills and increasing their vocabulary, fluency, and comprehension skills by reading, How to be a Good Citizen. I encourage you and your student to read it together and share your thoughts about being a good citizen. I hope you are able to practice the Dolch’s 2nd grade site words with your student several times (for just a few minutes) every day.If the student is struggling to know the words by memory, it will be helpful to just practice a few words at a time and add a few new words when mastery is reached. Please let me know if for some reason you need another set of flashcards.

Thank you forthe opportunity to work with you and your student. By working together, we will achieve great success!  Have a safe and happy weekend!
