The Misanthrope: Memorized Lines Performance

For this assignment, you will memorize and perform a scene fromThe Misanthrope by Moliere.

Before the performance you (and your group) will:

  1. Choose asignificantpassage from anywhere in the play to memorize and perform for the class. Be sure to sign-up for your selected lines. It must be 8 lineslong or more (per person). There is no maximum, but don’t bite off more than you can chew (or speak). You may work individually or with a group of students. Only 1-3 people per group, and no more than 2 groups can perform the same scene.
  1. Find a piece of artwork or music from the 17th Century that connects thematically to the scene. Incorporate this piece in your performance.
  1. Typethe following and turn in on performance day:

a)The lines for all group members (include Act #, Scene #, and Line #s).

b)An explanation of the movement and prop choices for your scene: how do they help the audience understand the scene? NOTE: Props should show evidence of thoughtfulness and effort. In other words, you shouldn’t be cutting out a mustache from a sheet of construction paper the day presentations begin.

c)Write a thematic statement for the scene. (You do not need to include a typed explanation of the significance of the scene and how it relates to the theme. However, you WILL need to explain this to the class when you perform.)

d)Title and composer or artist of the thematically connected piece with a typed explanation of how it connects to the scene.

e)The paper must be typed, 12 pt font, and double-spaced.Include all group members’ names in the heading.

During your performance you (and your group) will:

  1. Summarize the scene for the class and introduce the character(s).
  2. Explain why the scene issignificant and how it relates to a major theme of the play.
  3. Give me the typed paper with the lines so I can follow along as you perform.
  4. Perform your memorizedlinesperfectly to the class and incorporate the related piece.
  5. Use movement and props in a meaningful way.
