Third Annual Pikes Peak Regional Symposium on Student Success

Sponsored by PPCC’s Office of the President, PPCC Foundation, PPCC Writing Center,

Greetings Colleagues:

As the fall semester draws to a close, Sandra and I are mindful that April is coming sooner than we think, and we are writing to invite you to play an important steering committee role in this year’s symposium.

As in the past, high school and college teachers from the Pikes Peak region will gather in late April (the 22nd) to renew our discussions focused on answering the question, “As a teachers, what can we do—what should we do—to help students make a successful transition from high school to college?” Hosted by Colorado School District 11 at Community Prep School (with over 100 participants) last year, our symposium featured discussions on

College Prep Composition / Concurrent Enrollment Legislation
Developing Confidence For Success In College / Developmental Math
Creating Successful History Experiences / Foreign Language Collaboration
GT Pathways / New PreK-12 Colorado Content Standards
Obstacles To College Engagement / Online and Hybrid Course
Preparing High School Students with Disabilities / Student Retention
Younger Students in College

This year, in addition to sessions on literacy, history, foreign languages, and working with students with varied interests and diverse needs, we hope to draw science teachers into the mix.

Also, in a break from past formats, this year’s symposium will be organized as chaired roundtable discussions scheduled in 90 minute (or longer) sessions. This guided seminar/discussion format will emphasize face to face discussion among teachers who pre-select sessions based on their interest in exchanging ideas with colleagues on scheduled topics.

The Steering Committee will be responsible for selecting roundtable topics, recruiting Session Chairs, perhaps selecting preconference materials to be distributed to session participants, and for contributing the session descriptions that symposium participants will use to pre-select sessions.

The symposium program will be published in early March, and participants will register for specific sessions in advance of the symposium. Session Chairs will distribute pre-symposium documents and other study materials in early April to help participants may better focus their discussions and to anticipate action items that may arise from the roundtable discussions. And instead of serving as presenters, Session Chairs will facilitate the roundtable discussions.

We are tentatively planning to meet for initial organization after 3:30 pm on Tuesday, 30 November 2010 at PPCC’s Downtown Studio Campus. We will confirm date, time, and place once we gather a list of Steering Committee members.

If you are interested in serving on this year’s steering committee, kindly email your intent to no later Monday, 22 November 2010.

And in any case, reserve 22 April 2011 for the Third Annual Pikes Peak Regional Symposium on Student Success.

Sincerely,

Larry Giddings
