EvaluationProcess:
The Paoli Wildcat Basketball League (PWBL) selection committee shall be comprised of aPWBL Board Member, PWBL Select/Tournament Team Coordinatorand a third party that is approved by the PWBL Board of Directors. This committee will be responsible for evaluating and selecting the players they feel will allow them to field the most competitive travelteam. No PWBL Board Member or Coach is allowed to assist in the evaluation process in which they have a son trying out. The committee will make the final decisions with respect to a team formation.

Please note: All boys are considered to have a “fresh start”. Any prior experience in the PWBL tryout process or participation on a former PWBLselect/tournament teams will not be taken in consideration for the 2010 evaluations. Past participation does not guarantee a spot on a team this year.

Assessments:
This process will include individual and group drills and activities designed to assess a player's skill level in various areas, including shooting (including layups, free throws and outside shots off the dribble and passes), ball handling (both hands), rebounding, passing, game/court awareness, defensive ability, footwork, agility/athleticism, conditioning, communication, movement with and without the ball, energy/hustle, effort/attitude and team concept (offensive and defensive).

Each tryout session will include 3 on 3 and 5 on 5 scrimmages to assess players' skills and on-court decisions in game situations.

Please note: 3 on 3 and 5 on 5 scrimmages are not measureable metrics in and of themselves, but rather means of creating game-like situations by which individual skills (such as court vision, teamwork, defense, etc) can be observed. There is no value or evaluation tied to results of these scrimmages - game score is irrelevant.

PWBL Tournament Teams provide an opportunity for area youth to participate in an enriched and competitive basketball program. Potential players must participate in the tryout process. Players who are selected following the tryout process will be placed on a team to play a tournament schedule from February – April 2010.

  • All players wishing to be considered for a tournament team are expected to participate in each scheduled session of the tryout process. Attendance exceptions and accommodations will only be considered when arranged with the PWBL Select/Tournament Team Coordinator in advance of the tryouts. Exceptions and accommodations will be considered on a case-by-case basis only for compelling and extenuating circumstances (in the PWBL's discretion). Note: missing a tryout session could negatively affect a boy's chances of being placed on a team.
  • Twenty (20) players will be selected from each age group. Those final twenty players will be divided into an “A” and “B” squad. Each team will consist of ten (10) players and two (2) coaches.
  • In some situations, a “B” travel team may not be selected. This will depend on the skill level of an age group, number of quality players and also the coaching commitments. Simply put, if there are no qualified volunteers and enough players then there will not be a “B” team.
  • The intent of the tryout process is to conduct an impartial, objective and accurate assessment of each player's basketball skills and ability to develop and succeed in a "team" basketball context.
  • Parents of participants are not permitted to observe any phases of the tryout process. 9 year old parents are encouraged to attend the final scrimmage on January 24.
  • Player positions may be considered in player selections and team assignments, so as to avoid an all-guard or all-post team.
  • No parental contact with evaluators will be permitted during the tryout process. All questions, comments and concerns/issues should be directed to the PWBL Select/Tournament Team Coordinator.
  • A parent willing to coach might help impact the chances of their child making a specific team. You do not need to be a coach during the regular season to be considered. Please contact the PWBL Select/Tournament Team Coordinator via email if you have any interest.
  • Coaches will be selected after the travel teams are announced.
  • Practices will start in the middle of January and continue through March. There will be two practices a week, one on the weekend and one during the week. Games are usually on the weekends but some tournaments will play games during the week.
  • Travel Team cost will be approximately $150 per player. (This fee will vary depending on the amount of tournaments entered.) This amount includes tournament fees, referees, uniforms & gym time. Cost for an overnight stay at The Hershey Lodge during the Hershey Tournament is not included in this fee.
  • PWBL is currently investigating the participation in new invitational tournaments for the 2010 season. A final tournament team schedule will be sent out to all participants in early February.
  • If you are selected for an “A”team you will be invited to play the next season on the “Select Team”. All “B” team players will be considered but not promised a spot on the “Select Teams” the following year. (Please see the Paoli Wildcat website for more Select Team information.)

Please check the website after every tryout phase to see if your son will advance to the next tryout. Coaches WILL NOT be contacting the boys. Names will be posted on the “Boys Tournament Team” tab NOT the “Select Team” tab by the Wednesday following tryouts.

If you have any questions please feel free to email me at anytime.
