2007 Specimen Tree Selections

Crimson Prince Japanese Maple: $110 (7 gallon, 4’ tall)

A highly ornamental small tree (20’) with deep purple- red foliage; considered hardier with a faster growth rate than the more common Bloodgood variety.

Legacy Sugar Maple: $90 (10 gallon, 6’ tall)

No tree is more tied to the character of New England (50’). Its graceful form and fall color is unmatched. A drought tolerant variety w/ dark green summer leaves.

Briotti Red Horsechestnut: $70 (7 gallon, 5’ tall)

A medium shade tree (30’) with striking red flowers in showy 10” long clusters. Large palmately compound leaves give the tree a distinct character and kids love collecting the chestnut seeds covered in spiky husks.

Autumn Brilliance Serviceberry: $80 (10 gallon, 7’ tall)

A native tree (20’) tree with year round interest. Delicate white spring flowers, fruit for wildlife, red fall color and streaked gray bark for winter character.

Pyramidal European Hornbeam $60 (7 gallon, 6’ tall)

A symmetrical tree (35’), its formal character could be mistaken for a tree that has been sheared. Its leavers and gray bark are similar to beech.

Cherokee Sweetgum $60 (7 gallon, 6’ tall)

A, cold hard, virtually seedless, variety of the native sweet gum tree (40’). Deep burgundy to red fall color and corky textured bark creates fall & winter interest.

Prairifire Crabapple $60 (7 gallon, 6’ tall)

Best of the red leafed crabapples (20’), its disease resistance means no spraying. Has lasting pinkish-red flowers and small red fruit for winter interest.

Akebona Flowering Cherry $40 (5 gallon, 5’ tall)

A cultivar of the yoshino cherry that made Washington a springtime destination. The upright cherry tree (25’) has clouds of fragrant delicate soft pink flowers.

Red Oak $30 (5 gallon, 5’ tall)

A stately fast growing native oak (55’) that transplants well. Lustrous dark green foliage turns russet brown in fall. Very tolerant of urban growing conditions.

Accolade Elm $50 (7 gallon, 5’ tall)

A disease and insect resistant alternative to the American elm (70’). Unlike many, this improved elm has the American’s vase form and arching branches.

Rivers Purple Beech $100 (b&b, 6-8’ tall)

A true Newport tree; this variety is the most popular of the purple leaf beeches (50’). The smooth silver-gray bark is beautiful in the winter

Purple Fountain Beech $90 (b&b, 5-6’ tall)

A great beech for a small garden with its narrow form, upright trunk and cascading branches (20’). Dark purple foliage turns greener through summer.

Blue Atlas Cedar $130 (b&b, 5-6’ tall)

A specimen evergreen tree (40’) with stunning short silvery-blue needles. Use on its own as a focal plant to enjoy its pyramidal form and horizontal branching.

Dawn Redwood $80 (b&b, 5-6’ tall)

A 50 million year old tree with a pyramidal form attractive exfoliating bark and trunk buttress. Do not be worried when the needles turn orange, it is deciduous.
