School Site Council

Minutes

Present:Lori Eshilian, Diana Salazar,Vanessa Stewart, Carmen Fox, Ted Braucht, Kevin Gotts, Victoria Lopez,Lucy Casas, Manoosh Martinez, Yessenia Aguilar, Arlene Ledesma, Cynthia Garcia

Call to Order:

The meeting was called to order at 3:25 p.m. by Kevin Gotts.

Reviewed minutes of last meeting:

Minutes reviewed for April 23, 2015 School Site Council meeting.Minutes were reviewed and approved by the School Site Council Members.

Program Update Reports:

Diana Salazar reviewed the following:

  1. School – Wide Title 1

The deadline for 2014-2015 purchases requisitions was May 11.

The following were purchased with Title 1 funds:

  • New Furniture for the New Horizons Office.
  • Downstairs computer lab purchased new desktop computers and furniture.
  • Small chromebook cart for parents and AVID tutors to check out in the New Horizons Office.
  • AVID supplies - planners, binders , notebooks
  • Buckle Down books for 10th grade English 2 CAHSEE prep classes.

Next school year will purchase PSAT for 10thgrade students who want to take the test and all 11thgrade students. Title 1 or LCAP funds will be used.

  1. English Learners

20 students are being redesignated this school year. On Tuesday, May 26 a ceremony dinner will take place to recognize them. The students are excited about being redesignated. Usually the grades are holding them back from being redesignated.

Other Business:

Carmen Fox reviewed the following:

  1. Phelan School Visit

About 25 Spanish 3 students will be going to Phelan on Tuesday, May 19. They will be reading Spanish books to the students. In March teachers attended the CABE conference in San Diego and were presented the idea. Phelan school wants pictures of graduating Whittier High School students so they can display them.

New Business:

Lori Eshilianreviewed the following:

  1. Willie Gordon Voting

The School Site Council members were asked to vote for the naming of the Whittier High School Library to Willie Gordon Library. A turning display case of him with pictures, books he has written and other items will be displayed. The recommendation letter will be sent to the Superintendent and board for approval. The recommendation will also be presented to the PTSA and Whittier High School Alumni.

Lori Eshilian motioned to approve naming the Whittier High School Librarythe Willie Gordon Library as discussed. Vanessa Stewart first the motion and Lucy Casas second the motion to approve. The recommendation naming Whittier High School library to the Willie Gordon Library was approved by the School Site Council members.

  1. Title 1 Plan Voting

Thanks to Vanessa Stewart and Diana Salazar who focus on the Title 1 plan to get more people involved.

The following 2 bullets were added to the Title 1 Plan from Goal 2:

Goal 2 (Area of Improvement): Increase learning success rate of all statistically significant subgroups with an emphasis on English Learners.

Monitor Progress Tools:

Student assessment data will provide the bulk of our progress monitoring

for this goal.

Tasks

Establish an EL

intervention support team

2 bullets were added to the Title 1 Plan

  • Share more information to departments about ELs and Redesignation requirements (Cardinal Camp, Late Start meetings)
  • Organize more Whittier College mentoring

Lori Eshilian motioned to approve Title 1 School-Wide Plan as read and discussed. Ted Braucht first the motion and Vanessa Stewart second the motion to approve. Title 1 School-Wide Plan approved.

Announcements:

  • Annuals will be distributed on Friday, May 15, 2015
  • Christine Gotts received the Hunter Foundation Scholarship

and Montebello-Whittier Masonic Lodge Scholarship.

The Hunter Foundation recognition luncheon will be Saturday, May 16, 2015.

  • Mudd Run - Saturday, May 16, 2015
  • Baccalaureate - Saturday, May 30, 2015
  • Senior Breakfast - Tuesday, June 2, 2015
