How to Submit Samples for Testing to Master Painters Institute (MPI)

Many of the details are found at MPI's web page:

http://www.paintinfo.com/mpi/specs/index.htm

The standards of interest to recycled paint manufacturers are Detailed Performance Standards, so you need to fill out the Detailed Performance Application Form, near the top of the webpage, as well as the MPI customs letter. A commercial invoice must be included with the shipment stating the value of the shipment. A nominal cost should be stated in line with the value of the product.

Include a copy of the paint label, MSDS, and any technical info you may have with the samples.

Include contact information for your point of contact.

Submit one quart samples. It is important to use can clips to holdthe lid on.

Ignore the statement that it must be untinted white, this obviously does not apply to recycled paint. A light to mid-range color is preferred for recycled paint.

Shipping: Please address any correspondence or shipments to:
Mr. Bob Welch, Technical Director, Master Painters Institute
4090 Graveley St.
Burnaby, BC
V5C 3T6

Latex paint can be shipped by ground or air. UPS is often used by other manufacturers and Federal Express is the fastest.

Specify what category you are submitting for – check the list at WWW.paintinfo.com. For exteriorcertification of flat paints (MPI gloss level 1), it would be MPI#10. For interior it would be MPI#53 if the gloss level falls within MPI level 1 or MPI#44 if it falls in MPI gloss level 2. MPI gloss level definitions can be found at:http://www.paintinfo.com/mpi/approved/sheen.htm . If you do not know the gloss level, one strategy would be to submit for #44, and MPI would inform you if the gloss level does not fall in the range and test it to the appropriate standard based on the actual gloss measurement of the sample.

Cost: Category #10 will cost $1,400 to test and #44 and #53

will cost $800 each. For any other questions on costs, contact Bob Welch at (604) 298-7578 or .

Results: Results will be sent in writing to the contact. Interior tests take approximately 4-6 weeks and exterior tests take 6-10 weeks.
