THE IMPACT OF THE OMEGA PHARMA JUDGEMENT

This breakfast meeting will consider the High Court judgement in the case taken by the trustees of the Omega Pharma Pension Scheme against the Scheme's employer, in relation to contributions the trustees argued were payable to the Scheme by the employer. It will look at the judgement and what it means for schemes generally andtrustees. It will also look at what issues arose during the case that were important in the final decision.

Presentation by:Philip Shier, Senior Actuary, Aon Hewitt

Philip Shier is a senior actuary in Aon Hewitt with over 30 years’ experience of providing actuarial and consultancy advice to a wide variety of pension scheme clients in Ireland and the UK.

He is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries in Ireland and an Associate of the Irish Institute of Pensions Management.

Philip is a Past President of the Society of Actuaries in Ireland and is currently chairman of the International Committee. He has represented the Society on the Pensions Committee of the Actuarial Association of Europe (formerly the Groupe Consultatif Actuariel Européen) since 1999, and was Chairman of that Committee from 2005 until October 2011. He represents the Society on the Council of the International Actuarial Association and is a member of its Pensions and Employee Benefits Committee and of its Nominations Committee.

In March 2011, Philip was appointed a member of the first EIOPA Occupational Pensions Stakeholder Group and was reappointed for a second term in September 2013.

He acted as an expert witness in a number of pensions cases, including most recently Greene & others v Coady & others (the Element Six case).
