MCNHR Graduate Student Travel Award

MCNHR Graduate Student Travel Award Guidelines

The College of Nursing Endowment Fund has allocated $3,000 a year to the Manitoba Center for Nursing and Health Research (MCNHR) to offer Graduate Student Travel Awards. Applications will be considered, on a first come first served basis, until yearly funds have been depleted.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Applicants must be a nurse.
  • Applicants must be students in good standing and enrolled either full-time or part-time in a Masters or Ph.D. program in Nursing. PhD students in Applied Health Sciences Program or Interdisciplinary PhD are eligible provided their academic supervisor holds a primary academic appointment in the College of Nursing.
  • The applicant must be presenting a paper or a poster as first author or co-author at the conference or scientific meeting
  • The travel conference must be relevant to the student’s academic program/studies
  • Applicants must submit an application for the Faculty of Nursing Graduate Student Travel Award Application and confirmation (at least 1 month prior to travel)that a paper/poster, which is relevant to their program of study, has been accepted for presentation at a conference
  • Students may not receive funding more than once during their program (or no more than once at the Masters level or more than twice at the Ph.D. level.)
  • Students who receive travel funding are required to submit a short report (2 pages maximum) on their attendance at the conference/scientific meeting which may be used in MCNHR or College of Nursing print or web-based reporting. As part of the reporting, students will be asked to highlight the value of the conference to their studies.
  • Students who receive travel funding will be required to present their paper/poster within 6 months at a MCNHR organized event such as the MCNHR Research Seminar Series, MCNHR Research Day or Graduate Student Poster Competition.

Amounts:

$500 for travel in North America

$750 for International travel

Application process:

Applicants will be required to complete the attached application form and include the following additional information with the application form:

1. Proof that a paper/poster has been submitted/accepted for presentation at a conference/scientific meeting (proof of acceptance must be submitted at least 1 month prior to the event)

2. The abstract of paper/poster being presented (maximum 1 page).

Applicant Statement of the Reason for Travel
Provide a brief statement (500 words maximum) that outlines why this conference is important, how it will advance your work as a graduate studentand how it contributes to the Faculty

Students must be enrolled at the times of application, travel and reimbursement.

If airfare is being claimed for reimbursement, students must arrange their travel through the University of Manitoba Concur system (Contact the MCNHR for further information and assistance).

Decisions concerning the awards will be made within three weeks of the recipient of the application.

For Conference Travel:

Recipients must submit within 1 month of travel:

  • Proof of travel in recipient’s name (boarding passes)
  • Original receipts
  • Conference program page (photocopy).
  • Student who receive travel funding are required to submit short report (2 pages maximum) on their attendance at the conference/scientific meeting which may be used in MCNHR or Faculty of Nursing print or web-based reporting. As part of the reporting, students will be asked to highlight the value of the conference to their studies and the Faculty.

Students who receive travel funding will be required to present their paper/poster within 6 months at a MCNHR organized event suchas the MCNHR Research Seminar Series, MCNHR Research Day or MCNHR Graduate Student Poster Competition

Funds will be reimbursed as a lump sum payment after travel has occurred, and upon receipt of proper documentation. Reimbursement requests must be received within 1 month of the date of travel.
