Atkins Receives National Senior Citizen’s Award

Arlington, VA– The 60 Plus Association, a non-partisan senior citizens group with nearly half a million supporters nationally, has presented Lisa Atkins, Congressional candidate from the 2nd District in Arizona, the Honorary Guardian of Seniors’ Rights Award.

The award is presented to Democrats and Republicans in the House and Senate who vote “senior friendly.” The honorary award is also given to candidates who score 60 or above on a 100 point scale. This test indicates how the candidates would have voted had he or she been an actual member of Congress.

The scorecard also salutes efforts of Congressional members and candidates to end the federal estate or “death tax.” The unfair estate tax falls heavily, not only on seniors, but also on “mom and pop” businesses and farmers all over the country. The “death tax” prevents families from passing along the fruits of their labor to future generations.

60 Plus Association President Jim Martin said, “I am pleased to present an Honorary Guardian of Seniors’ Rights Award to Lisa Atkins. In Congress, Lisa will work to provide senior citizens with the first prescription drug benefit in history, eliminate the 84-year old death tax, stop the 30-year old raid on Social Security and Medicare Trust Funds, and repeal the 1993 tax on Social Security benefit, as well as eliminate the earnings limit imposed on seniors aged 62-64 and supporting long-term care insurance tax incentives. Clearly, seniors will have no finer friend in Congress than Lisa Atkins.”

60 Plus has over 500,000 members nationwide, and over 11,000 in Arizona with 2,868 in the 2nd District. Past recipients of the Guardian of Seniors’ Rights Award from Arizona include Senators John McCain and Jon Kyl and Reps. Bob Stump, Jim Kolbe, J.D. Hayworth, John Shadegg and Jeff Flake.
