where it was played with 7 players on each side.

Handball & Wellness:

Even though the game of handball may seem easy to play, it does provide an

opportunity to increase an individual’s overall wellness. The object of the game

is for your team to work together and communicate (teamwork) in order to move

the ball down the court/field (cooperation) using short passes and moving into

open space (strategy) to score goals. Other important aspects of playing include:

good eye-hand coordination, agility, and reaction time. Cardiovascular and muscularfitness are also a benefit of playing. (physical wellness) Good sportsmanship should always be demonstrated while playing! (social wellness)

Simplified Rules of the Game

1. Object of the Game

Handball is a team sport that combines the elements of soccer and basketball. Six players move the balldown the field trying to score by throwing the ball past a goalkeeper, defending the net requires a quick reaction time from the goalie.Asuccessful scoring attempt (when the entire ballcrosses the goal line) results in theawarding of a single point. For safety reasons for a goal to count in handball, the shot must be takenfrom behind the free throw line or crease.

A regulation game is played in 30 minute halves. A coin toss determines which team has first possession. The game begins with a throw-off and the clock stops only for team timeouts, injuries, and at the referee’s discretion.

2.Field of Play

A versatile game, team handball can be played indoors in the gym, outdoors on the grass, on a paved area or on the beach.

3. The Ball

A regulation handball is made of leather and is about the size of a large cantaloupe. It varies in size and weight according to the group playing. In Cherokee Handball we use a soft gator skin ball.

4. The Teams

A game is played between two teams. In a regulation game there are seven players on each team allowed on the court at the same time (6 court players and 1 goalie).

5. Playing the Ball

Cherokee Rules:

Players are allowed to:

  • Possess the ball for no more than 5 seconds.
  • Run with the ball for up to 3 steps.

Players are not allowed to:

  • Endanger an opponent with the ball.
  • Pull, hit, or punch the ball out of the hands of an opponent.

Players on defense must stand an arm’s length distance away from the player with the ball, allowingthe offensive player room to pass the ball.

This is a quick paced game. Passes should be kept short and quick for the offense to be successful. There is a quick turnaround from offense to defense. Communication and teamwork are required to make sure all players are covered when a team transitions to defense.
