The Curriculum
Shell Schools set out to provide high quality education which will enable children to reach and maintain the highest standard possible. The intention is that children will fit in well to any educational setting when they transfer.
All Shell Schools deliver the International Primary Curriculum (IPC). Language and mathematics are taught using the National Curriculum inEngland or a similar curriculum and use the Dutch Kerndoelen for language and culture in locations where official Dutch mother tongue is delivered through NTC schooling. The International Schools Assessment (ISA) and CITO tests are used to monitor achievement in these subjects.
For further information about the IPC please visit:
The pupil-teacher ratio in Shell Schools is lower than average so that children whose first language is different from the language of instruction and those with specific educational needs, can receive extra help. The low ratio also takes into account the fact that children may enter and leave the school during the academic year and may miss periods of schooling when parents have, for operational reasons, to take holidays in term time.
Holidays are similar to those in Europe but there are variations in actual school times due to climatic and local circumstances. The academic year is normally from September to July.
Each teacher is expected to contribute fully to the life of the school and the wider expatriate community, and there are many opportunities to do so – through, for example, school concerts, assemblies, extra-curricular activities, sports and PTA events. Most parents are supportive and involved in their children’s education. Consultation evenings and curriculum events form part of the normal school activities, as do staff meetings and other school based activities.
