Learning Objectives for Taster week:

To meet the members of the HPB team and understand their individual roles and how each contributes to the care of HPB patients (1.4, 7.9)

Gain a greater understanding of the day to day activity of a HPB surgeon and trainee.

Take part in assessment of new HPB cancer patients in clinic where new patients are seen and assessed by both consultant surgeon and specialist nurse. (7.3)

Take part in followup clinics where results are given to patients and treatment options are discussed along with routine follow up patients (2.1, 10.2)

Assessment of patients benign HPB disease- gallstone disease and pancreatitis. (7.2,7.3)

Appreciate the importance of addressing nutritional issues in patients with pancreatic and hepatobiliary disease.(10.3)

Understand the importance of communication skills in difficult situations (2.2)

Understand the complexity of treating metastatic disease surgically and the coordination between different surgical teams and oncologists in metastatic liver disease. (7.9,10.2)

Observe breaking bad news (2.3)

Observe the importance of patient understanding in decision making particularly with the regards of risk and benefits of procedures. (2.3, 7.1, 10.2)

Observe how management plans for HPB cancer are individualised to take in to account the patient’s needs and wishes (2.3, 10.2)

Appreciates how co-morbidity can affect the options available to patients when considering major HPB surgery (10.5)

Appreciate the long term affect on quality of life of major surgery.(10.1)

Appreciate the holistic approach to treatment of HPBmalignancies. (2.1)

Be part of the theatre team and scrub in to assist surgical procedures

Observe patients being consented for surgery (2.5)

Appreciate the importance of patient safety checks in theatre (3.2)

Follow an aseptic technique and understand the additional measures taken when using implants and foreign material in breast reconstructions (7.7)

Participate in the MDT meeting and discussion of patients(1.4, 11)

Take part in ward rounds reviewing the post operative patients and understand the measures for both preventing and treating post operative complications.(7.4, 10.4, 8.4)
