The Jesus Who Laid Down
by Eddie Lawrence

1. He Laid Down in a Manger

This story tells us He came as a man and grew up as a man from infancy.

Luke 2:16And they came with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the Babe lying in a manger.

- He was fully human, a babe.
- He attracted angels, wise men, and a star.

2. He Laid Down in a Boat

This story shows us his authority as Lord who could control wind and wave.

Mark 4: 35On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them,“Let us cross over to the other side.”36Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat as He was. And other little boats were also with Him.37And a great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that it was already filling.38But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?”

39Then He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea,“Peace, be still!”And the wind ceased and there was a great calm.40But He said to them,“Why are you so fearful? Howis itthat you have no faith?”41And they feared exceedingly, and said to one another, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!”

- He was fully human, he tired.
- He moved in authority to calm the sea.

3. He Laid Down in a Garden

This story shows us his place as mediator and intercessor and his willful obedience to the Divine purpose.

Matthew 26: 36Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and said to the disciples,“Sit here while I go and pray over there.”37And He took with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and He began to be sorrowful and deeply distressed.38Then He said to them,“My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch with Me.”

39He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying,“O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as Youwill.”

40Then He came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter,“What! Could you not watch with Me one hour?41Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeediswilling, but the fleshisweak.”

- He was fully human, he agonized.
- He moved in intercession.

4. He Laid Down in a Tomb

This story shows us the finality of his death as our sin bearer who bore the ultimate penalty of sin which death with all its separating powers.

John 19: 40Then they took the body of Jesus, and bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury.41Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid.42So there they laid Jesus, because of the Jews’ PreparationDay,for the tomb was nearby.

-His burial signifies his death. His death is an important and necessary element of the Gospel.
- He was fully human, he died.
- He bore the sins of the world.

-This last lying down preceded the great raising up. The resurrection of Jesus.

The Greatest Gift Giver
by Eddie Lawrence

Reflect with me about some of the wonderful gifts that Father God has freely given us as His children:

1. The Gift of His Son

John 3: 16For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

2. The Gift of Eternal Life

Romans 6: 23For the wages of sinisdeath, but the gift of Godiseternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

3. The Gift of Saving Grace

Ephesians 2: 8For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves;it isthe gift of God,9not of works, lest anyone should boast.

4. The Gift of the Holy Spirit

Acts 2: 38Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.39For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”

5. The Gifts of the Holy Spirit

1 Corinthians 12:1 Now concerning spiritualgifts, brethren, I do not want you to be ignorant:2You know thatyou were Gentiles, carried away to these dumb idols, however you were led.3Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God calls Jesus accursed, and no one can say that Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit.

4There are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit.5There are differences of ministries, but the same Lord.6And there are diversities of activities, but it is the same God who works all in all.7But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profitof all:8for to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit,9to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit,10to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to anotherdifferent kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues.11But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.

Wise Ways of Wise Men
by Eddie Lawrence

The group of wise men we read about that visited Jesus when he was a child give should aspire us to have a hunger to worship Jesus as they did. Let’s learn from their ways. First let’s read the Scripture narrative.

Text: Matthew 2: Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem,2saying, “Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East and have come to worship Him.”

3When Herod the king heardthis,he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.4And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born.

5So they said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it is written by the prophet:

6‘But you, Bethlehem, inthe land of Judah,
Are not the least among the rulers of Judah;
For out of you shall come a Ruler
Who will shepherd My people Israel.’”

7Then Herod, when he had secretly called the wise men, determined from them what time the star appeared.8And he sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the young Child, and when you have foundHim,bring back word to me, that I may come and worship Him also.”

9When they heard the king, they departed; and behold, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came and stood over where the young Child was.10When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy.11And when they had come into the house, they saw the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him. And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him: gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

12Then, being divinely warned in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed for their own country another way.

What Kind of Story is Christmas?
by Eddie Lawrence

1. Its a Good News Story

Luke 2: Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night.9And behold,an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid.10Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people.11For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.12And thiswill be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.”

13And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying:

14“Glory to God in the highest,
And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”

2. Its a Supernatural Story
