Job Safety Analysis:

Step / Description / Hazard / Controls
1 / Ensure that work area is clean before starting task. / Trip, slip, fall / Good house keeping, keep area clean and remove clutter and debris.
2 / Remove all jewelry or tie back long hair that may be caught by the machine. Remove all loose clothing or any strings from pullovers. / Bruises, cuts / Remove anything that may be caught by the machine.
3 / Inspect shear before using. Ensure that guard is in place to prevent the operator's fingers from coming in contact with the cutting blades. The distance between the lower edge of the guard and the bed of the shears should not be more than 3/8 inch. The See-thru Finger Guard enables the operator to see the edge of the lower cutting blade. / Cut off finger/s / Ensure that guard is in place to prevent the operator’s fingers from coming in contact with the cutting blades. Watch placement of fingers.
4 / Move 1 sheet of metal to shear if sheet of metal is long or awkward ask for assistance from co-worker to move sheet to squaring shear. Be certain that the size and thickness of the material being cut is not in excess of the shears design limitations. Insert 1 sheet of metal to be cut, (generally it is inserted from the front of the machine), however with long sheets, it is more convenient to insert the material from the rear of the machine as this allows more freedom when operating the foot treadle. Only cut 1 piece of metal at a time, do not cut wire rod, bar stock, seamed edges grooved or welded metal. / Sharp metal lacerations
Amputation of finger/s / Wear gloves when moving sheet metal to shear. If inserting sheet metal from rear of shear and using an assistant the operator must make certain the that assistant's hands and feet are clear of the machine before stepping on the foot treadle.
5 / Normally one person can operate the squaring shears. Once metal is inserted and line up on the cut line, place your foot on the treadle and apply a little pressure this will bring down the automatic hold down attachment and clamp the metal so that it will not move during the cut, continue to apply pressure with your foot on the treadle and the cut will be completed. / Sharp edges
Lacerations / Watch placement of your hands, if working with an assistant ensure that their hands and feet are clear of the machine before stepping on treadle. Do not exert excessive force when cutting. If so the piece is either too big or thick, or the equipment is out of adjustment.
6 / Once metal has been cut do not reach behind shear to grab metal. Always release the foot treadle before the metal is picked up from the rear of the machine. If metal has been inserted from the rear of the machine to make a cut, follow same procedure; wait until the foot treadle has been released before retrieving metal. / Sharp edges
lacerations / Use gloves to pick up cut metal edges will be sharp. Retrieve your work once the knife is returned to the up position and your foot is off the pedal.
7 / Replace used sheet stock to the appropriate area, small pieces should also be placed in a designated area as not to create interference with the shear or cause a slipping problem. Clean the area of debris after use with a brush, not bare hands. / Slip, trip, fall
Lacerations / Clean up area after use, do not use bare hands use a brush or broom.
