Supplemental Budget
Below is a list of social studies materials, which I am suggesting for purchase. These materials will be beneficial to me as I teach social studies in the early elementary classroom.
Video Tapes
1). Charlie Brown This Is America Video Series (set of 7 videocassettes) - $99.00
This video collection will provide my students information about American history by Charles Schulz’s beloved set of animated cartoon characters. With a mix of historical photographs and film footage, along with, animated cartoon sequence, children are invited to imagine them selves going back in time and taking part in historical events. Video titles include The Mayflower Voyagers, The Birth of the Constitution, and The Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk.
2). American History for Children Video Series (set of 12 videocassettes) -$359.40
This video collection will provide my students information about historical events, documents, and symbols, holidays, national leaders, and the contributions of Americans from diverse backgrounds. This video series was designed especially for young viewers and is narrated by Irene Bedard (the voice of Pocahontas in Disney’s Pocahontas). Video titles include American Independence, African American Life, and United States Flag.
3). My America: Building a Democracy (set of 13 videocassettes) - $659.00
These videos will help make government relevant to the children in my classroom. For example, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg answers kids’ questions to unravel the mysteries of the Supreme Court. Senator Barbara Boxer also explains how a bill becomes a law. Video titles include Neighborhood and Community, What is a Democracy?, and Rights and Responsibilities. (Each video also contains a seven-page guide with a video modeling lesson and tri-level follow-up activities. This video series also provides the teacher with “Resource Directory Disks” and a fifty-minute teacher training video.)
4). How We’re Different and Alike (1 videocassette) - $69.95
Through this video the students in my classroom will be introduced to the concept of diversity and come to understand that prejudice springs from misunderstanding and fear and, ultimately, every human being shares the same feelings and needs.
Enrichment Reading Books (Fiction and Non-Fiction)
1). If You… Series (15 paperback books) - $85.00
These books will help my students answer questions they maybe asking themselves about American history. The books are divided into short sections, each section addressing a particular question. For example, section titles from If You Traveled on the Underground Railroad include “What does it mean to be a slave?’” and “How many slaves escaped?” Other book titles include Sailed on the Mayflower and Lived at the Time of the Civil War.
2). A Mice Way to Learn About Government Series: Woodrow G. Washingtail and Friends (4 hardback books) - $78.00
Through these four books my students will learn about our three branches of government and presidential elections through the adventures of the famous mouse, Woodrow Washingtail and his friends. (This series also includes two curriculum guides that will help any teacher plan his or her beginning government unit.)
Computer Programs (Software)
1). All About Elections (1 CD-ROM) - $55.95
Through this CD-ROM students will learn about the election process, for example, who may vote and the Electoral College. Five games or activities, a mock election for the whole class, a presidential election game, etc. also reinforce and review concepts about the election process.
2). USA Explorer (1 CD-ROM) - $29.95
This CD-ROM will reinforce map-reading skills children will encounter while n class. Children will also learn about language skills, weather patterns and predictions, historical and regional facts, and critical thinking skills while traveling across the United States of America. The maps in this program are also printable for students to color.
Games and/or Simulations
1). Kid Town (1 simulation) - $50.00
This simulation involves the entire class, including the teacher! Students play workers and consumers, while the teacher plays the role of the mayor, as they learn about the key social studies concepts of what a community is. Students will practice their reading, writing, art, and math skills as they work in cooperative learning groups naming their town and setting up stores and services.
2). Mock Trials (9 trial booklets with guides) - $43.00
These reproducible plays teach students how trials are conducted. Each booklet contains a guide on using mock trials for lessons on justice and good citizenship. Trial titles include The Big Bad Wolf v. The Three Little Pigs and Goldilocks v. The Three Bears.
Teaching-Learning Supplemental Booklets
1). Scholastic Atlas of the United States (1 hardback atlas) - $19.95
This atlas contains detailed full-color maps of the fifty states and the District of Columbia. Each map indicates cities, state capitals, highways, waterways, forests, mountains, etc. On the opposing page a short article on the people of the state, industries, and way of life is included. This atlas will strengthen the students’ ability to obtain knowledge from other resources besides their textbooks.
2). How the U.S. Government Works (1 paperback book) – $6.95
This book explains, using the simplest sentence structures and the most basic concepts, the structure and function of the federal government. A glossary defines technical terms like “judicial branch” and a chapter called ”Your Job” discusses the role of all American citizens. Through this book students can research topics that they found confusing within their textbook or did not come to understand during the class lessons or activities on the federal government.
Learning Activities
1). Teaching K-5 Social Studies Using the Internet (1 reproducible activity book) - $24.95
Exploring a variety of topics, these reproducible lessons utilize the Internet to give students hands on experience with technology. Lesson topics include the history of transportation, community workers, and American heroes.
2). Teaching Tall Tales (1 activity book with reproducible pages) - $10.95
Ten reproducible stories are accompanied by history notes, questions, activities, and map work. For example, students honor John Henry with the great machine race (math) or celebrate Sal Fink by writing on-scene reports on her adventures. This activity book also includes a fold-out color poster for a tall tales quiz game.
3). Teacher Talk: Multicultural Lesson Plans for the Elementary Classroom (1 paperback book with reproducible pages) - $26.00
The interdisciplinary (language arts, math, science, and history) lessons, within this book, will instill a greater acceptance of diversity and a sense of belonging to the classroom. Lesson topics include world holidays, learning about Japanese society and tr5aditions, and American diversity.
