Chemistry Superhero Trading Card Project

Chemistry is like a foreign language. There are many words that have specific chemistry meanings. Also, the elements on the periodic table compose every single thing in our universe. Including you!

You will be assigned one of the 54 naturally occurring elements found on the periodic table.

Your task:

Create a “Superhero or Supervillian element trading card” which will incorporate

special powers, along with a picture of the superhero.

Trading Card Guidelines

1.) The card should be created on card stock. The dimensions should

be half a sheet of typing paper.

2.) The front of the card must have:

·  Creative name of superhero and the superhero’s alter ego if he/she has one (i.e. Superman/Clark Kent; Wonder Woman/Diana Prince)

·  Brief description of how your superhero acquired, used, or lived with their special algebraic power.

·  Drawing, graphic/visuals (in color) of what your Algebraic Superhero

3.) The back of the card should include the superhero’s “statistics”: (see example)

a.) What is the name of your element?

b.) Does your element have a symbol associated with it?

c.) When/where is your element used? Give an example.

1.) What difficulties does your villain/hero have?

2.) When did you’re her/villain first figure out they had this power?

3.) Other important information.

Chemistry Trading Card Rubric (20 pts) – turn in rubric with trading card

Organization (4 pts)
·  card contains name, date, period / /2
·  card is aesthetically pleasing, neat, and shows effort / /2
Front of card (4 pts)
·  Includes element name, appropriate symbol, and brief description of superhero power / /2
·  Includes a picture of your hero (must have properties incorporated into outfit/design) / /2
Back of Card (12 pts) – may earn neg. points for incompleteness in any of these sections.
·  Follows format on above page and all information is included / /12

Element Advertisement or Commercial
(Like what you would see in a magazine or an infomercial that sells your element)

Your task:

The advertisement must include the element’s name, symbol, atomic number, atomic mass, cost, a unique use for the element, and an advertising slogan that describes one or more of its important uses or qualities. Advertisements must be neat, colorful, and contain all the information listed above. You may add pictures that relate to your advertisement theme.

Be sure to include:

·  Element’s symbol

·  Element’s name

·  Atomic number

·  Atomic mass

·  Ad slogan

·  Cost

·  Unique use

·  Your name

You may add pictures or drawings

that illustrate the various

uses for your element.

Your add must follow the same

format as this example!!

Note: This can be filmed (like a TV commercial) or even done as a podcast or audio recording (like what you would hear on the radio) It must be creative, you must be in it and it must contain all of the same information found in a print ad.

·  What characteristics (physical and chemical properties) define your element? (Includes the phase (s, l, g), melting point, boiling point, and physical description (color, odor, etc.), and if it is flammable, combustible, corrosive, etc.) / /4
·  The HISTORY of your element’s discovery. (When was the first documented evidence recorded of it? By whom and where was its discovery documented?) / /4
·  What is the IMPORTANCE of your element? How do people use it? What are some examples of uses? / /4

Element Properties Prezi

Create a prezi about your element using www.prezi.com

You will need to create an account on the website to store your presentation. Note: There is quite a learning curve with Prezi. Please only choose this if you have time to adequately learn and use this excellent and unique resource.

Element Prezi Guidelines:

1.) Your prezi must include:

·  Element’s Symbol

·  Element’s name

·  Atomic Number

·  Atomic Mass

·  Number of protons, neutrons, and electrons

·  Characteristics of element (at least 3)

·  Important uses of element (at least 3)

·  Three or more pictures of your element

You decide what your Prezi will do and how it animates. Have fun learning how to use a new and innovative teaching tool.
