Interviews
- Frank Bell, 409th pilot, Historian for the 409th Bombardment Group (L): Bell’s response in disagreement to RE Hudson’s article contenting that all members of Mission 163 should have received the Distinguished Service Cross as did Connick. Bell believed the gunners should not have received the same medal at the pilots as the “gunners were innocent passengers on the airplanes” just going along for the ride.
- John Cartwright, 409th gunner, interviewed 2002, Frisco, Tx. Cartwright (recently deceased). He was bumped the last minute for a navigator from the Invader that led Mission 163 into battle. He had flown over 30 continuous missions with the pilot of that plane until Mission 163.
- Preston Hansen, 409th pilot, interviewed via phone March 2002. “When they asked for volunteers we knew it would be a dangerous mission, but we weren’t expecting it to be a strafing run, at least not until the next morning.”
- William E. Hudson, 409th gunner, interviewed off and on over the years. Now 84, sole surviving participant in Mission 163.
