Summer Assignments for 3-D Design

Dear Student-

We are very excited that you have decided to take AP 3-Design next year. As in any AP level class, the expectations are greater but the rewards are many. The 3-D Design portfolio allows students the opportunity to submit work in ceramics, sculpture, jewelry, and mixed media. The following is a list of the types of concentrations that have been submitted in the past:

  • A series of welded metal sculptures that investigate formal design elements and principles including line, shape, texture, balance, repetition, harmony, variety, etc.
  • A series of cast silver rings with stone settings.
  • A series of multi-media sculptures that explored cut-outs and negative space.
  • A series of animals created first of cardboard and found objects and investigated with the final pieces being made of thrown parts on the wheel.
  • A series of wearable costumes that embodied the earthly elements and seasons.

As this course is an advanced placement, college level class, your work load will be more rigorous than in other classes. Your work will be graded with a stronger rubric and 50% of your work will be done outside of class.

Additionally, you are required to create four pieces of high quality, sculptural artwork over this summer. These works are intended to supplement your Breadth section of the portfolio!!!

The following ideas are for your inspiration:

  • Make an abstract sculpture at least 15” tall using only scrap pieces of wood. You may use either hot glue or wood glue and all sculptures must be painted.
  • Build a self-portrait of your head using clay from Ms. Furr.
  • Re-create a normally small object (nail clippers, a nut, a screw) in giant size. Cardboard, paper-mache, and paint work well for this.
  • Create a large scale functional object (ex: table, lamp. NOT A CHAIR!)
  • Create a kinetic sculpture using cardboard, wood or metal.
  • Figurative sculpture using clay, wire, and/or plaster gauze.
  • Using the material of your choice, create a motif (shape or linear motif). Make several of them and assemble them to create an interesting design.

Remember to utilize the elements and principles of design!

I look forward to seeing your work this fall. They are due when we return from break and critiqued the third week of school, no exception. If you do not turn in this work, you will fail the first six weeks. If you need help or have any questions, please feel free to text or call me at 214-908-8865. Leave a message as I don’t answer calls from strange numbers.

Good luck!

-Ms. Furr
