3) IB English 11 L. Taylor

If you have any questions regarding this assignment, please contact Laura Taylor at . This mailbox will be checked periodically throughout the summer months.

  1. Read the novel, The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho ISBN #9780061122415 over the summer. We will be examining this novel when you return to school in the fall. Annotations are expected and checked. The following written assignment will be due on Tuesday, September 6th 2011.
  1. Choose 8 passages from the novel (a passage may be a sentence, a paragraph or a whole page). Write an informal response to the passage; each response should be a minimum of 200 words. This response should be your own work.. You should prepare FOURfrom following types of responses and the other FOUR are free choice: (journals, reading logs, diary entries, or additional entries of the required four)
  1. Literary -- This would entail an analysis of a particular literary device, the author’s writing style or the characterization techniques evident in the passage. You also might compare the passage to another literary work.
  2. Personal – In this type of response, you connect the passage to something from your own experiences. The best personal entries will be both narrative and reflective, meaning that you are able to reflect on the significance of your experiences.
  3. Mimetic – You might write a scene that is not included in the actual novel. You also might write from the perspective of a character (journal entries, poems, stories, and letters). Either way you should try to adopt the voice of the character. You may attach a rationale or explanation of what you have written.
  4. Interdisciplinary – Discuss the passage from the perspective of another discipline. History, philosophy, psychology and other humanities will often be most appropriate, but you may find references to science, math or other subjects you want to discuss. Be sure to cite resources used if you do research.

You may type up the passage analysis or copy the passage and affix it to the response page. In any case, the passage should appear on the same page as your response.

  1. Assessment: Your passages will be graded on language and content. By language, I mean your clear, correct use of English and some evidence of your own burgeoning voice and style. Content refers to your original analysis and the manner in which you organize your response. Expect a quiz, paper or additional assignment at a later date.
  1. Oral Presentation: You will present one of your entries in a 4-6 minute presentation. This presentation will be your first introduction to the IB Presentation Rubric in which language, content, register, and organization will be graded.
