2005General Manager Shellharbour Hospital South Eastern Sydney Illawarra Area Health Service – duties involved general management of 150 bed regional hospital in NSW with emergency, surgical, general medical, special care, maternity, diagnostic and acute mental health services. During my time I introduced an incident reporting system, reviewed and strengthened the relationship between the general hospital and the mental health beds and prepared for hospital accreditation. A major part of the general manager duties was strategic planning to redefine hospital services to reflect changing community needs and fit with the role of the network of hospitals in the area.

2003Acting Deputy CEO Illawarra Area Health Service. Duties included oversight, management and strategic policy development of a major referral hospital (500 beds) and the full range of services from inpatient through community health services to public health and preventative health services. This role was a strategic planning role to steer the area health service to meet government policy objectives and provide services to meet community needs. At this time there were some 4,500 staff including health professionals, technical and administrative staff and managers.

2002General Manager Albury Base Hospital Greater Murray Area Health Service. Duties general management of 150 bed regional rural hospital with a major emergency department, surgical, medical, diagnostic and mental health services. During this time there were serious bush fires in the area which necessitated disaster planning in case of an influx of smoke inhalation admissions.

1994General Manager Community Health Illawarra Area Health Service and conjoint appointment Associate Professor Primary Health Care University of Wollongong. Community Health general management duties included oversight and strategic development of the full range of services from general community health nursing, counselling, to drug and alcohol and sexual assault services. There were approximately 500 staff comprised of health professionals and administrative and technical staff as well as managers. The budget was $25 million. During this time planning for the introduction of computerized information system for community health and the development of reporting systems for management performance indicators were undertaken. Quality Award for outstanding performance was achieved. Strategic planning included building the management team and ensuring they were supported and developed to take on their management roles and inbuilding the relationship between community public health services and general practice to improve continuity of care for shared patients.

1992Associate Professor/Director National Reference Centre for Continuing Education in Primary Health Care University of Wollongong. Duties included the strategic planning for the primary health care works force and facilitation of support for training and development of primary health care professionals.
