Nature and Purpose of Agency

The Summit School is a private, non-profit special education high school for students with learning disabilities.

Tasks Available for Students

Tutoring and working with students in all subjects. There is a strong need for math and science tutors.

Time Requirements

Homework Help Program: Monday-Friday 3-5 PM

After School Programming: Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday: 3-4:30 PM

You must be able to commit to 15 hours of service throughout the semester in order to serve at the Summit School.

Nature and Purpose of Agency
Day services facility for the developmentally disabled.

Tasks Available for Students
Various tasks available including preparing art/dance/music/photography/theatre/computer programs, to assist with group activities.

Those with a background or career in teaching and/or art/music/dance/photography/theatre may enjoy: Teaching, Preparing art materials, Becoming an Artist-in-Residence
Classroom Assistant: Classroom assistants must come prepared to teach or run a group activity. Our classroom assistants help in so many ways. Responsibilities for this position include setting up the room, interacting with our individuals, helping individuals follow directions to ensure completion of work, and cleaning the classroom after class.

Time RequirementsWeekdays between 9am and 2pm

Students must be informed that there is to be NO FOOD and NO FLUIDS given to any disabled individual at any time. Students will not be left alone with individual with disabilities for any reason, at any time. Also, if students are not sure of any situation at any time during the visit they must reach out to a supervisor at QCP.

Service Hours: QCP will track our volunteers’ hours of service. Your time with us will be carefully recorded and easily accessible by staff. We are more than happy to assist our volunteers in filling out forms needed to verify service hours.

Nature and Purpose of Agency

QCH is a multi-service settlement house that serves nearly 25,000 children, youth, adults and older adults at 22 different sites in 11 neighborhoods throughout Queens.

The QCH Pomonok Center provides a free After-School Program for children in the community from Kindergarten throughsixthgrade. The children primarily live in nearby public housing. Children are able to enjoy an array of hands-on educational and recreational activities that encourage academic success, positive decision making, and positive relationship building. Program participants engage in: homework help, educational enrichment, arts ‘n’ crafts, life skills and character development, fitness, and teambuilding sports and games.

Free camp for children ages kindergarden to8th grade. Children can enjoy a summer full of: Academic Enrichment, Sports, Games, Arts ‘n’ Crafts, Fitness, Trips, and many other exciting hands-on educational and recreational activities

Tasks Available for Students

  • Assist with after-school program (through the end of June 2012; 2:20-5:20 p.m. every day) and summer camp (7 week session begins on July 7, 2012). Opportunities to develop workshops and educational activities for K-8 students are available.

Nature and Purpose of Agency

Volunteers at Ozanam Hall perform many valuable services and give of themselves in numerous ways to better the quality of life for our residents, both physically and spiritually.

Tasks Available for Students

Visiting residents to lend friendship and compassion; Assisting with various activity programs; Accompanying residents on outings; Transporting residents to activities (Mass, rehab, patio visits, etc.); Assist residents with feeding through our Loving Spoonful Program; Assist visually impaired residents by distributing and reading mail; Teaching computer skills to residents; Participate in Music Therapy with residents; and assist staff with light clerical work.

Time Requirements

Orientation is given on Tuesdays at 3:30 from the second week in September until the end of June, or 2:00 during the summer months of July and August.

  1. NYS Department of Health has implemented that every volunteer must get the flu vaccination. Documentation of vaccination must include the name and address of the individual who ordered or administered the vaccine and the date of vaccination. This must be given to the nursing home before starting service
  1. Complete the Health Assessment form at the Clinic on the 2nd Floor.TheClinic(2ndfloor) is open to volunteers: Tues, 8:30 to 12:00, 1:00 to 3:30
  1. Review the Orientation Packet you receive from the Development Office (on C) and attend the mandatory orientation.

Students must be dressed in business casual clothing. NO JEANS or SNEAKERS. Volunteers will receive on-site training. Nature and Purpose of Agency

QCPC is responsible for providing a wide range of children’s mental health services to the children & Families of Queens and Manhattan. QCPC’s service includes inpatient, several modes of day treatment, outpatient clinic treatment and intensive case management. Program locations are throughout Queens and Manhattan. Inpatient admissions are primarily transfers from local acute hospitals. QCPC serves seriously emotionally disturbed children and adolescents, ages 5-18. Programs include inpatient hospitalization, day treatment, outpatient clinic treatment, intensive case management and homemaker services community education and consultation services. Inpatient program in Queens provides intermediate care treatment to youngsters from Manhattan and Queens.

Tasks Available for Students

Varied tasks, inpatient and outpatient areas.

  • Education - Assist in school areas working one-on-one in general classroom activities. Inpatient ages 10-17 and outpatient ages 5-9.
  • Recreation - Assist in playing table games, motivating kids to engage in physical activity such as dancing and exercise.
  • Rehabilitation - Assist in pre-vocational skills groups, computers and assist with development of positive work skills.

Time Requirements

Requires a weekly commitment; can be two hours a week for five weeks, etc.

Student Awareness/Special Instructions

Requires updated medical with an updated PPD within one year. If you do not have a healthcare provider, QCPC can work with you and their onsite provider. In addition, the Office of Academic Service-Learning has all forms for you to complete before your site visit to Queens Children including Approval by Child Registry Board, a signed Confidentiality form and orientation packet. All can be picked up in the Office of Academic Service-Learning.

Nature and Purpose of Agency
Forestdale, Inc. is a not-for-profit, non-sectarian voluntary agency that offers comprehensive services to children and families. Forestdale incorporates the principles of strengthening families, keeping them intact, and helping each individual within the family become more self-sufficient, while at the same time providing services to reduce the risk of abuse, neglect and/or placement of a child into the foster care system.

Tasks Available for Students
Student Visit Host: All of the visitations on the Forestdale campus between children in foster care and their birth parents require supervision. The Visit Host would work with the Case Planners to facilitate this time with the families. The visits involve monitoring the family’s interaction and reporting on it to the Case Planners. Currently, Case Planners supervise the visits, which usually take place between the children and their birth parents.

Time Requirements

Note: A minimum of a 10 week commitment is required to participate in this program.

Mondays-Thursdays, 2 to 4 hour shifts between 3 PM and 7 PM. You must be able to commit to at least one day per week and a shift each week for 10 weeks to participate in this program. You will be meeting with the same families each week for the duration of this project.

  • Students must attend an orientation training prior to participating in this program.
  • Students must complete a background check form and become fingerprinted to participate in this program. There is no charge for these services and Forestdale will provide the list of locations for this services. There are multiple locations in Queens.

Grace Plaza Nursing and RehabilitationCenter was established in 1972. Located in a five story building in Western Nassau, GracePlaza has been consistently awarded accreditation by the JCAHO. It is conveniently located and is easy to get to from major roads and highways, the Long Island Railroad, and area hospitals. GracePlaza, is a 214 short and long term resident facility and offers progressive, quality healthcare in an atmosphere that speaks to the unique needs and challenges of every individual in our care. We have learned to understand and respond to the complicated needs of the families we serve. Our programs and services are designed to provide education, support and counsel in every aspect of care.

Tasks Available for Students
Mentorship and Tutoring Activities

  • Various tasks available including; reading to residents, bingo, walks, fitness and recreation.
  • There are four different units at the facility, which include, subacute-Dementia-long term and medically complicated patients. Students can work with staff to assist patients during recreation programs, attending family meetings, obtaining resident intakes etc.

Time Requirements
Must be available to serve for more than 20 hours.

Opportunities available seven days a week availability from 9am – 6pm.
