Te Kura provides for secondary students to attend a one-and-a-half-day Comprehensive First Aid Course. The Red Cross has training rooms throughout the country, and offer courses many times a month. Because of this we do not list each individual course.

Unit Standards:

Level 1: 6402 – Provide resuscitation (1 credit)

Level 2:6401 – Provide First Aid (1 credit)

Level 3:6400 – Manage first aid in emergency situations (2 credits)

COASTGAURD NZ

Coastguard Boating Education run maritime safety courses throughout the South Island. Boating Education also offers these courses online and workbook based distance

learning. please contact Warrick McCutcheon regarding student interest.

Day Skipper

About: Day Skipper is the best course for those new to boating. It is an introductory course, and applies to a wide range of vessels - including yachts, launches, powerboats, jet skis, sea kayaks, and waka.

The course covers boat handling, safety equipment, navigation, tides, weather, rules and regulations, emergencies, and knots – it is a broad course outlining the whole boating experience.

Date: 14th-15th April

Location: Picton

Unit Standard: 26542 – Demonstrate basic knowledge of the operation of pleasure/small craft by day (Level 2, 6 Credits)

Maritime VHF Radio Operator Certificate

About: The Maritime VHF Radio Operator Certificate course covers the general features and functions of a maritime VHF radio, correct distress, and urgency procedures for ‘Mayday’ and ‘Pan-Pan’ calls, pro-words and phonetic alphabet, trip reports, weather services, call signs, EPIRBS and other search-and-rescue equipment.

About: a course developed for students entering the workforce or tertiary education,

About: Students work in teams to plan an event. Working with a small budget they organize the event from its initial concept through to hosting friend’s families and invited guests. Over 3 days.

WHENUA ITI OUTDOOR EDUCATION

INTERNATIONAL TRAVEL COLLEGE OF NEW ZEALAND

  • Hotel Grand Mecure, Monaco, Nelson

ITC offer students the opportunityto gain credits towards NCEA levels 2 and 3. They also give students a taste of the tourism industry through site visits, guest speakers, and participation in activities. Most courses will run as requested. Adventure Tourism

About: A course about adventure tourism, students learn in a fun environment, increase public speaking ability and learn about safety. Over 2 days.

Tourism

About:This course is held at the Transport Museum in Invercargill. The unit covers the importance of good staff and what it takes for companies to do well in the largest industry in NZ. This is achievable for both year 12 & 13 students and is a real eye opener to students who realise that they indeed have a big part to play in a company’s success. You will visit 3 different areas of tourism and ITC organises these visits.

Flight Attending

About:This course will leave students with a clear indication of what they need to do in order to prepare for the exciting world of being a cabin crew member. This is a course suitable for an academic year 11 and any year 12 or 13 student. The class will not only participate in role play activities but use real on-board equipment to test their skill of what it takes to be a successful candidate. Each student will complete the open book assessment and asses their current position and what they now need to do to prepare for the role.

Travel Short Course

About: This course gives students the feeling of tertiary study and covers, cultural awareness, communication and customers’ service. All of these skills are desired in many industries not just relating to Tourism or Aviation.
