GENERAL DUTIES OF ALL SUPPORT STAFF

1To support the school directly and/or indirectly in the fulfilment of its Catholic mission, and to identify with our Catholic/Christian ethos and behavioural standards.

2To ensure prompt attendance for duty at the appointed time. Colleagues are asked to avoid casual changes to the hours shown, unless these are negotiated with the line-manager and relayed to any other members of staff who may be affected by them. The working of additional hours may be a personal and voluntary matter, but when this is requested by the school, there will be an entitlement to additional pay. Termtime only staff are not required to attend for working school INSET day closures, unless by special arrangement.

3To ensure any absence is reported by contacting the assistant site managerbefore 7.00am on the day of absence:

On return from absence, please see the Business Manager in order to sign back on for duty.

4To sign in/out as appropriate in cases of late arrival or leaving the premises during the normal hours of working.

5To be aware of and support the school’s policy on Health and Safety, particularly:

-To be aware of likely hazards, emergency procedures, first-aid provision and procedures for accident reporting.

-To wear/use any appropriate safety clothing and equipment.

-To conduct all activities in such a way that the health and safety of pupils and colleagues are safeguarded.

6To participate in the system of performance management/professional development operated by the school.

7To carry out any reasonable professional request made by the Headteacher, Leadership Team or other line-manager, provided that it is compatible with prevailing conditions of service and employment law.

TASKS – MAINTENANCE

Security

  1. Lock/unlock school buildings and areas
  2. Undertake regular security checks and identify security risks
  3. Monitor fire safety equipment and carry out fire drills
  4. Operate and respond to alarm systems where appropriate
  5. Monitor CCTV or surveillance contractors
  6. Provide emergency access to the school site
  7. Be the first emergency contact for the school out of hours security company

Maintenance

  1. Maintain the asbestos register
  2. Undertake appropriate repairs e.g. redecorating and fixing
  3. To organise and carry out various maintenance duties to ensure that the general upkeep and maintenance of the premises is satisfactory, as per specific schedule for your school
  4. To organise and carry out minor improvement work e.g. erecting shelves, notice boards, bookshelves etc. as agreed with your line manager
  5. To be jointly responsible for the implementation and operation of a preventative planned maintenance programme and for routine inspections of the buildings, fixtures, fittings, furniture, premises and grounds to assess for minor work or repairs required to be carried out to maintain safe and satisfactory conditions and to ensure the maintenance cycle is carried out in a timely manner
  6. Monitor fire and security systems, water suitability, meter readings and record weekly findings in a clear and concise manner
  7. Joint operation and maintenance of heating plant and lighting systems
  8. To oversee and monitor the electrical testing of portable electrical appliances and to maintain the appropriate records
  9. Undertake regular site inspections
  10. Identify defects and record repair and maintenance requirements
  11. Collect and assemble waste for collection including confidential waste
  12. Undertake specialist cleaning tasks
  13. Provide emergency access to the school site
  14. Coordinate deliveries to the school site
  15. Monitor performance of contracts and record performance against specified standards
  16. Liaise with contractors
  17. Ensure hot work permits are raises, signed and recorded for all relevant works
  18. Ensure specialist sports equipment is maintained in accordance with specified standards
  19. Monitor cleaning contractors and ensure high standards are maintained
  20. Provide training for staff where appropriate

Key Activities – Resources

  1. To advise on matters relating to energy control and conservation
  2. Contribute to planning, development and organisation of systems/procedures/policies
  3. Be responsible for maintaining records, information and data, producing analysis and reports as required
  4. Create and maintain a purposeful, orderly and productive working environment
  5. Ensure timely and accurate design, preparation and use of specialist equipment/resources/materials
  6. To undertake safety audits of the premises and to produce relevant risk assessments as required
  7. Promote and ensure the health and safety of pupil, staff and visitors at all times

Key Activities – Organisation & Supervisory

  1. Demonstrate and assist in the safe and effective use of specialist equipment/materials
  2. Provide specialist advice and guidance as required
  3. Portering duties e.g. delivering mail, moving furniture and equipment
  4. Assist the Business Manager in the management, administration and operation of lettings
  5. Jointly monitor and manage stock within an agreed budget, cataloguing resources and undertaking audits as required
  6. Ensure cleaning is in accordance with specification
  7. Organise and administer the use and maintenance of all school vehicles and carry out driving duties when required
  8. Liaise with the school meals service contractors in relation to their use of the site and provision of their service where appropriate

Responsibilities

  1. To undertake the role of Health and Safety Officer for the school, ensuring the health and safety of all pupils, staff and visitors (in accordance with appropriate health & safety legislation) at all times
  2. Ensure compliance by self and others with all health and safety policies and procedures
  3. Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety and security and confidentiality, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person
  4. Contribute to the overall ethos/work/aims of the school
  5. Participate in training and other learning activities as required
  6. Recognise own strengths and areas of expertise and use these to advise and support others
  7. Assist in the supervision, training and development of staff
  8. Ensure safe use by self and others of equipment and materials
  9. Establish constructive relationships and communication with contractors and other agencies/professionals
  10. To be responsible, in conjunction with the Business Manager and assistant site and premises officer, for the administration and control of appropriate areas of the budget
  11. Attend and participate in regular meetings
  12. Treat all users of the school with courtesy and consideration
  13. Present a positive personal image, contributing to a welcoming school environment which supports equal opportunities for all

Experience Required

  1. Previous school caretaking experience desirable but not essential
  2. Maintenance qualifications desirable
  3. D.I.Y. abilities essential
  4. Administration skills essential

Qualifications/Training

  1. Willingness to undertake induction training
  2. Good numeracy/literacy skills/GCSE (or equivalent) in Maths and English
  3. Specific training in specialist area if appropriate

Knowledge/Skills

  1. Willingness to develop knowledge of use of ICT and other specialist equipment/resources
  2. Working knowledge of relevant policies/codes of practice/legislation
  3. Ability to self-evaluate learning needs and actively seek learning opportunities
  4. Ability to relate well to children and adults
  5. Knowledge of Health & Safety procedures and precautions
  6. Knowledge of COSHH regulations
  7. Awareness of health and hygiene procedures

Normal Hours of Work

37 hours per week, full time. Overtime paid in agreement with line manager and/or Headteacher.
