St. Michael & St. Francis Xavier Bulletin October 22 & 23, 2016 Pastor: Fr. Harry Tully

Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

BLIND JUSTICE

A statue of Blind Justice stands atop many courts of law in the United States. She wears a blindfold and holds the scales of justice. She represents the ideal expressed in today’s reading from Sirach—that each person will be treated equally in the eyes of the law and that judges will “[judge] justly and [affirm] the right” (Sirach 35:18) based solely on the justness of each plaintiff’s case.

Yet we know that the wealthy can buy very good lawyers, giving them an edge in the courtroom. We know that blacks far outnumber whites on death row. We also know that high-profile defendants are often tried and convicted by the media before the judge and jury ever enter the court. However careful, no human judge or human justice system can be completely blind to factors such as race, wealth, religion, gender, age, or background.

THE MERCY OF THE COURT

In comparison, today’s scriptures depict God as “the just judge” who offers every person an equal measure of justice. Like the Pharisee in today’s Gospel, we must be careful not to overestimate our own worthiness or to judge the unworthiness of others. Like the apostle Paul, we must realize that, if we are judged to be righteous in the courts of God, it will be based not on our status as Christians, or on our good deeds, or on any other factor by which we might exalt ourselves. Instead, it will be solely because we asked for and relied on God’s mercy.

Sirach reminds us that God is swift to hear and respond to every person who cries out for mercy, even those whom the world despises as unworthy. “Those who [are] convinced of their own righteousness and despise everyone else” (Luke 18:9) would be well advised to humble themselves enough to beg for mercy, or they may get a surprise on judgment day!

Today’s Readings: Sirach 35:12–14, 16–18; Psalm 34:2–3, 17–19, 23; 2 Timothy 4:6–8, 16–18; Luke 18:9–14

Dear Parishioners,
A reminder that we are once again coming up to the change of our Saturday evening Mass time. We move from 5:30 back to 4:30. This change begins on Saturday, November 12, 2016.
I also want to announce another change. This is a little contentious but I am realizing as time passes it is getting harder for me to maintain our current Sunday schedule. As I look at the current attendance at the three Masses offered at St. Michael it is apparent to me that we could eliminate one or combine the two Sunday Liturgies. This Mass would be both English and Spanish. This offers us a real challenge. I am looking at beginning this the first weekend of Advent. The time for this Mass is still negotiable. I am sure this will generate discussions among us. For me it boils down to my physical ability to celebrate Sunday Liturgy as best I can. God bless us in our endeavors to give Him praise.

Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Theme: God knows and sees our hearts.

Ordinary Time- For a large part of the liturgical year, we devote ourselves to listening to the mystery of Christ in all its aspects unfolded as we seek God’s truth and understanding.

Step 1: Listen to the Word- What in this reading touches your heart? What lingers in your memory? Step 2: Look into your life.

Children: Jesus teaches us to be humble-but what does that mean? How do you show that you are humble?

Youth : God knows when we are doing things just for show, and when they come from the goodness of our heart. When have you caught yourself doing something just to be more popular or liked? How does it feel to do something that you know is good and just?

Adults: This Gospel reading suggests that we approach God and each other with humility. What does this mean, in practical terms? How do we "humble" ourselves? What does that mean to us?

.
