Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

LOVE OF GOD

It’s easy to tell when two people love each other. They like to be near each other and spend time together. They share intimate thoughts and feelings. They enjoy making each other happy. And knowing that they are loved allows them to reach out to other people and treat them with love and respect.

In this Sunday’s Gospel Jesus tells us that the greatest law is to love God with our whole heart and soul and mind. What does it mean to love God? Certainly it means spending time together by reading and reflecting on God’s holy word. It also means sharing our thoughts and feelings with God in prayer and listening for God’s voice. Where do we go to be close to God? We join God’s people in worship in the church, rest in God’s presence in the Blessed Sacrament, discover God in the wonder of creation and the miraculous moments of daily life. What can we do to make God happy? How do we, like the Thessalonians, “serve the living and true God” (1 Thessalonians 1:9)?

LOVE OF NEIGHBOR

The reading from Exodus makes it very clear that we serve God by serving those who are oppressed or in need. Jesus makes it more personal—we are to love our neighbors. That means those with whom we work and play and live. When we spend time with God we can’t help but experience God’s great love for us. And knowing that we are loved by God should make it easy to reach out in charity and justice to our neighbors both near and far away.

Thus, love of neighbor flows naturally from those who love God. We cannot truly say that we love God unless it shows in loving relationships and compassion to those in need. At the same time, we cannot maintain our love of neighbor unless we take time to drink from the wellspring of God’s refreshing love.

Today’s Readings: Exodus 22:20–26; Psalm 18:2–4, 47, 51; 1 Thessalonians 1:5c–10; Matthew 22:34–40

Pastor’s Corner

Dear parishioners,

Thank you so much for your concern and prayers over the last two weeks. My back is some better, but I am not there just yet. This is the story according to me. I was attempting my 'annual' house cleaning. I shouldn't call it "annual" but I would be embarrassed if you knew how often I get around to this. God love her, my Mom really taught me better! Well in my eagerness to get every dust bunny, dog hair and those pesky mites I pulled my bed away from the wall and stretched rather awkwardly for one lone hold out. "Snap - crackle - and pop!!!" I got it but it got me back. A few weeks I had mentioned that Jesus didn't carry the cross for himself but for us. As hard as I am trying to carry this cross for others I am failing miserably! What graces I should be receiving for you, are, how should I say it, lost because of all my grumblings. Hopefully, God will consider what He has to work with and overlook me and grant you an abundance of grace and perseverance on your journey.

This time of year as we prepare to celebrate God's great blessing let us thank Him in our generous response to our annual parish stewardship drive and our commitment to the work of the broader Catholic Community in fulfilling Christ's ministry through the diocesan Annual Appeal. Commitment Weekend is fast approaching. Please prayerfully consider what you can with God's help offer in time, talent and treasure.

Keep up the 'good' work,

Fr. 'Down - in - the - back' Tully

Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time Weekend of October 25/26, 2014
There is one word or command that summarizes today’s Gospel - love. For Jesus there is no distinction between these two commands of loving God and neighbor. One naturally flows from the other. In fact, for Jesus, these commands constitute a way of life for Christian stewards; a unique approach to life and to their relationship with others. Our neighbors include everyone with whom we come into contact: family members, friends, people we don’t like, strangers and particularly those most in need of our love and compassion. Love is always for doing well and helping others grow closer to the Lord. What are ways in which we might do better at following Christ’s love command?

Question of the Week

Theme: The Greatest Commandment: “Love”.

Step 1: Listen to the Word: As you listen once again to this familiar teaching of Jesus, what part of it touches your heart? What single word catches your ear?

Step 2: Look into Your Life.

Children: We show our love for Jesus by loving our friends and family. Share one way that you show your love.

YouthAdult: Jesus tells us that we are to love others as we love ourselves. Do you love yourself? Can you see the good that God has put within you?

“To everything there is a season and a time to every

purposeunder heaven a time to be born a time to love a time to heal a time to die and a time of peace.”

While his counselors fret, not knowing his whereabouts, he travels to a small village to visit a little girl who had come to the Vatican seeking his help. While still hiding his identity, he gets to work helping to rebuild this small community. But it will take some time, effort, help, courage…and grace. Can he get it done—before the whole world discovers that the Vatican has somehow “lost” the Pope? Movie starts at 6:30. The event is free, but donations are requested to help with the cost of pizza.
