Philosophy:

The aim of the Grade10 Physical Education program is to enable individuals to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to lead an active, healthy lifestyle. Physical Education 10 is a compulsory subjectrequired to graduate, as outlined by the Department of Alberta Education.

General Outcomes:

The Physical Education program is based on four general outcomes:

  1. General Outcome A: Students will acquire skills through a variety of developmentally appropriate movement activities; in an alternative environment.
  2. General Outcome B: Students will understand, experience and appreciate the health benefits that result from physical activity.
  3. General Outcome C:Students will interact positively with others.
  4. General Outcome D: Students will assume personal responsibility to lead an active way of life.

General Expectations:

Gym Attire:1. T-shirt, Athletic shorts of appropriate length.

  1. Sweats and Hoodie
  2. Proper footwear only in the gym (non-marking running shoes)

- No hikers, sandals, toms, flats.

- Outdoor footwear appropriate for the unit is

satisfactory.

  1. Dress appropriately for weather conditions. No exceptions.
  2. Undergarments should not be visible at any time.
  3. No belts, zippers, or jewelry.

NOTE: It is expected that this gymstrip will be worn at all times.

Locker Rooms:The locker rooms are a place for the students to change their clothes. Any inappropriate behavior in the change room such as wrestling, harassment, verbal abuse, or property abuse will result in the student being placed on the DVSS Discipline Cycle, which could be withdrawal from the course for a period time deemed appropriate by the administration and Teacher. ABSOLUTELY NO FOOD OR DRINK IS ALLOWED IN THE CHANGE ROOM.

NOTE: Valuables are to be left in the students locker and not brought to the gym or locker room. DVSS is not responsible for any lost or stolen items.

Daily Procedures: 1. Be on time, changed into appropriate gym strip, ready to participate.

2. Stop all activity at the whistle, on teachers command

3. If injured during class, you must inform your teacher at once.

4. NO SWEARING. SPORTSMANSHIP is important. Treat all

other students with the same respect you expect.

5. Treat all DVSS equipment with respect.

6. No equipment out until the teacher is present in activity area.

Attendance:Physical Education, is primarily evaluated on active participation, therefore attendance is mandatory. The DVSS Attendance & Late Policy will take effect in regards to inexcusable absences leading to possible course withdrawal for senior high students. (see student handbook for details).

Medical:The Physical education curriculum for Alberta states if an illness or injury prevents a student from participating in an activity for an extended period of time, a doctor’s note is necessary with statement of activities in which the student is not able to participate in. If that becomes the case a student may be given alternative activities or assignments to complete.

Non Dress

/Non Participation:A Non-Dress results in Non-Participation for that class. Without dressing out for Physical Education, you become unable to participate in class due to safety and hygiene concerns. Students who fail to dress may not be allowed to participate due to safety reasons. Students are responsible for bringing their PE clothing everyday.

  1. Quality of Participation – This includes: Participation, Attitude, Cooperation, Effort, and
