PRISON VAN - 7 TON PAYLOAD
Specification for a Prisoner Van type body for mounting on a 7 ton payload truck. Revised September 2000.
1 / GENERAL CONSTRUCTION
A totally enclosed body of double skin construction with integral roof and sides is required
The material used for the skin shall have a thickness of not less than 1.2mm sheet metal
Distance between skins to between 30-40mm
The metal used shall be corrosion resistant and treated against rust.
Insulation material must be fitted between the skin plates. Polystyrene with density of 16 kg/cubic
centimetre will be acceptable
The body shall be divided into the following compartments:
(a) A 1 050 mm long front compartment
(b) A 3 500 mm long main compartment (Note this dimension is the minimum, it can be longer to suit
the chassis)
(c) A 910 mm long rear compartment to form a guard's compartment
2 / FLOOR: The floor shall be 3 mm thick steel plate with a chequered pattern on the upper
surface.
3 / ROOF, SIDES AND PARTITIONS: The roof, sides and dividing walls shall be of
double skin construction. Insulation material shall be inserted between the skin plates.
4 / WINDOWS: Plant on Windows shall be fitted on the body as follows:
Front compartment One sliding window in front of body. Size: 1100 x 300 mm.
Main compartment - on each side: two sliding 1100 mm x 450 mm, 100mm below drip channel of roof
Rear compartment on sides : one 500 mm x 300 mm sliding and on rear side one fixed window on each
side of the door.
Windows between compartments shall be as follows:
between guard and main - two sliding 500 mm x 300 mm windows approximately
1 500mm above floor level and 300mm from side
between main and front - one fixed 1 100 x 300mm, 100mm from roof.
These windows to be glazed with 4 mm toughened glass for fixed windows and 4mm toughened glass
for sliding windows.
4.1 / PROTECTION ON WINDOWS:
(a) All windows shall be externally protected with 5 mm diamond wire mesh in a 20mm wide frame.
(b) All windows shall be internally protected with three equally spaced bars over the depth
of the window.
The bars shall run along the full length of the relevant compartment.
Bars to be 12 mm dia. mild steel rod/pipe.
Bars shall be permanently fixed to the body. Spacers shall be provided at regular intervals
for strength.
(c) Windows in partitions shall be protected as follows:
Front and main compartment: mesh both sides
Main and guard compartment: mesh on inside of main and bars in guard compartment.
(d) Window in front of front compartment
Wired mesh as for outside plus bars on inside.
5 / DOORS: Each compartment shall be fitted with doors as shown on drawing.
Door size: Minimum 650 mm wide by 1 600 mm high.
Door shall be of construction similar to that of body.
Door shall be reinforced where necessary.
Each door shall be fitted with three rap around hinges.
Door shall be constructed so to close on suitable seal to prevent rattling of the doors.
Doors shall be fitted with 25 mm x 4 mm tubular handrails that are flanged and bolted next to the door.
5.1 / LOCKS ON DOORS.
Guard compartment door shall be fitted with a standard handle and slam lock mechanism
All other doors shall be fitted a 25 mm container locking bar to accommodate a medium
size padlock
6 / SEATS
Seats in all compartments shall be 500 mm above floor level.
Seat width shall be minimum 350 mm for single row and 610mm for double row seats.
Seat material shall be suitably smoothed and bolted to rigid supports
or steel welded to support
Seat supports shall be welded to the floor.
Carrying capacity of seat shall be not less than 150 Newton per meter.
Seats in guard compartment shall be similarly constructed but shall be padded
with high density material of at least 50mm thickness and provided with a padded backrest
6.1 / SEAT LOCATION
FRONT COMPARTMENT:
Underneath window a 2 300 mm long seat as indicated on drawing
Against partitioning wall a 1 400 mm long seat
MAIN COMPARTMENT:
Against front partition wall a 1 400 mm long seat
Against sides a 2 500 mm long seat.
Centrally a 2 500 mm double seat
GUARD COMPARTMENT:
Against partition wall a 770 mm long padded seat with backrest
Below rear windows a 400 x400mm padded seat.
The seats shall have no sharp edges or corners that can cause injury
7 / WATERTAP, FUNNEL AND WATERTANK
In each compartment a 10 mm press button type tap over a stainless steel or non corrosive funnel with
drain pipe shall be installed in the positions indicated on drawing
A 20-25 mm drain pipe to drain directly to outside must be supplied. The drain must not
discharge on any tyre or other vehicle part.
A watertank with 30-45 litre capacity shall be installed in the front compartment at least
1 370mm above floor level with a 150 mm clearance between brim and roof.
A smaller 10-15 litre tank must be fitted in the guard compartment .
The tanks shall be constructed of corrosion resistant material of a quality that will not effect
the taste and or smell of the water.
The tank filler opening shall be fitted with a tight-fitting lid with a small ventilation opening.
The watertank shall be joint to all the taps by corrosion resistant piping of 10 mm ID.
All piping and taps shall be securely fixed to the walls of the compartments.
8 / COMMUNICATION between driver and guard compartment.
Tenderers must provide an effective communication system between guard compartment and driver. Full details of the system must be presented with tender offer.
9 / HANDRAILS
The roof of the main compartment shall be equipped with a handrail, of 25mm ID galvanised steel tube
with wall thickness not less than 4 mm, that extends over the entire length of the compartment
The handrail shall be suspended in a position corresponding to the centre of the corridor between the
seats and shall be capable of carrying a load of 150kg per meter length
Suitable reinforcements must be provided in the roof structure for the supports
Handrails of 25 mm ID steel tube of wall thickness at least 4mm, that are flanged and fixed to the body
shall be provided at each door as shown on drawing
NOTE:
Handrails are also required inside the compartments for easy access.
10 / STEPS
Steps shall be provided underneath the entrance to a compartment
The steps shall not cause injury to user and shall be at least 200mm deep.
Suspended steel steps shall be fitted on the side below the doors
The steps shall divide the distance between ground and compartment floor in three.
Width of tread to be 200 mm minimum.
All steps shall have chequered plate tread and shall be strong enough to carry a total mass
of 200 kg.
11 / VENTILATORS
Rotating ventilators are required and shall be fitted to the outside of the roof of the compartments.
The ventilators shall be of a durable high quality construction and rainproof.
The roof over each compartment shall be furnished with ventilators as follows:
front compartment - two
main compartment - eight(two on the centre, three each side over the handrails)
Guard compartment -two.
Forced draught ventilators shall be sized to cause at least 4 air changes per hour when the
van is travelling at 50 km/h.
Ventilator protection. Each ventilator shall have on the outside a rigid and suitable metal
guard housing that can easily be removed for servicing.
On the inside of the compartment the ventilator opening shall be covered with a metal cover
that will prevent objects to be entered into the ventilator
12 / STATUTORY REQUIREMENTS
The body shall comply with the requirements of the Road Traffic Act as amended.
13 / WORKMANSHIP
Workmanship shall be of high quality and in accordance with sound engineering practice.
The body shall be free from defects that detract from their appearance or that might affect the

PAINTING
All metal parts must be painted with durable paint to match the colour of the cab
An etched primed under coat is required
LIGHTS
Dome lights with wire mesh protectors shall be fitted inside the compartments as follows:
One in the front compartment
Two in the main compartment
One in the guard compartment
The lights shall be controlled from the guard compartment and all wiring shall be concealed

16OVERALL HEIGHT RESTRICTION

An overall height restriction of 3 200mm for the vehicle is applicable to the body with the ventilator protectors fitted
